Featherweight interim champ Yair Rodriguez is undoubtedly one of the best strikers in the promotion right now. His entertaining fighting style and his experience of having fought elite opponents throughout his time in the UFC have made him a dangerous name for the featherweight division.
Speaking of ‘El Pantera’ and his electrifying skills that saw him beat the likes of Josh Emmett and Brian Ortega, a former UFC fighter addressed the Mexican’s fighting style in a recent video. Surprisingly, he even compared Rodriguez with former UFC champ Demetrious Johnson and pointed out a certain skill set of the 30-year-old, which he believed was even better than that of Johnson.

UFC legend Chael Sonnen opened up about the featherweight division in the latest video on his official channel. Speaking of Rodriguez, Sonnen claimed that the Mexican was a unique individual; even stating that he would rather go unnoticed than be the center of attention.
?”Rodriguez is a rough guy. If you get to know him personally, he’s a rough guy, but publicly he’s not. He’s very quiet, he has a different approach to this. He almost would rather be unseen unheard, and forgotten about.” Sonnen said.
As he went on heaping praise on the interim champ, Sonnen even happened to compare him to current One championship flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson. Surprisingly, the 46-year-old didn’t just stop at the comparisons with one of the greatest MMA athletes of all time, but even claimed that Rodriguez was a more “unpredictable” fighter than ‘Mighty Mouse‘.
“He is more unconventional and unpredictable than Demetrious Johnson,” he stated.
Sonnen’s words definitely come as a massive statement for the Mexican. Being compared or, in this case, being dubbed even better than Johnson by a UFC legend himself, is something that could boost the confidence of ‘El Pantera’ before he heads into a title unification fight with Alexander Volkanovski.

Talking about the fight that would see Rodriguez square up against the current champ, Sonnen felt that the interim champ had an opportunity to surprise Volkanovski when they fought.
Explaining that the Australian might have been focused on bigger goals, i.e another shot at the lightweight gold currently held by Islam Makhachev, he said, “I’m just sharing for you when you get a little bit distracted and that can happen with success.”

Chael Sonnen’s assessment of the fight could come as a unique perspective for fans of the talented featherweight division. While Volkanovski is no doubt a tough challenge for Rodriguez, the Mexican’s unpredictability, as he mentioned, might create a few problems for the champ.
