Could UFC 309 be the last time we see Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic in the octagon?

“Jon Jones is the perfect fighter’s frame,” Joe Rogan said on JRE episode #2226 with Theo Von, “because he’s still very strong, he has a lot of muscle but he’s also long and lean. So he’s not relatively bulky compared to his weight because he’s stretched out.” Rogan’s assessment comes shortly after Jones’ opponent for UFC 309, Stipe Miocic, said he was looking for ‘chinks in the armor’ of the reigning champion. Well, if you’re Miocic, you might want to pay attention to what Rogan said next.

The UFC commentator could not stretch enough how Jones’ reach advantage was dangerous to his opponents. If someone tries to go in on him, especially against a counterstriker like Jones, it is undoubtedly a herculean task. The JRE host said, “If you have a distance like that between where a guy can hit you and you can’t hit him, you have to cross that, and you’re so vulnerable while crossing that. And if a guy’s a good counter striker and he’s active and he’s long, they’re so, so hard to get in on. So, a guy like Jon, that’s always going to be an advantage.”

What makes Jon Jones even more dangerous is that he does not just use counterpunches to catch his opponents. No, ‘Bones’ will hurt you before he finishes you. The 37-year-old loves using his elbows and there’s a fairly good chance he’ll slice you open if you rush in without caution. Some of you might remember how Conor McGregor’s 74-inch reach gave him an upper hand against smaller featherweights. Except, McGregor was looking to finish the other with his left cross while Jones, as mentioned earlier, will hurt you a lot more. He’s even dedicatedly training the now legal 12 to 6 elbows. So what? Miocic could always wrestle, right? Wrong!

If Stipe Miocic tries to outgrapple Jon Jones, it would still be ‘Bones’ who’ll come up on top, as per Joe Rogan. He said on JRE #2226 with Theo Von, “With Jon, if you do get in on him, that’s no picnic because he’s an elite grappler, so he’s going to strangle you; he’s going to throw you to the ground. So like you, you’re f—ed. You’re in this f–k zone. On the outside, he’s kicking the s**t out of your knees. Jon was one of the nastiest like side-kicking people’s knees out.”

Well, it surely looks like Joe Rogan has a lot of respect for Jon Jones as a fighter. And the fight against Stipe Miocic is surely going to be an exciting affair for the fans. The bout will surely offer a lot of adrenaline, however, the end of it might also leave many with tears in their eyes, as predicted by a legend of the sport, Chael Sonnen.

Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic to announce retirement post-fight?

Chael Sonnen believes fans might be in for a surprise after UFC 309, and it’s not the kind of shock they’re expecting. The UFC legend has revealed that the two heavyweights would be announcing their retirements after the fight. The speculations about ‘Bones’ and ‘Stone Cold’ retiring have been on the news ever since their heavyweight clash was announced back in 2023.

However, according to Sonnen, on his YouTube channel, all this talk of retirement was never really about walking away from the sport. Instead, he argues it was a clever marketing move by Dana White and the UFC that was purely designed to build excitement around the fight. ‘The American Gangster’ also suggested that ‘Bones’ might be using the retirement rumors to stir up buzz and reactions from the MMA world. “There was for nothing more than marketing reasons; it was thrown out that both Jon and Stipe would retire after this fight, and Jon grabbed it. After he said it [about the retirement], he got quite a reaction. So, he said it again, and he said it again.”

Well, Jon Jones has also hinted that he might be going for a fight against Alex Pereira if he decides not to hang up his gloves. So surely there’s a chance that UFC 309 might not turn out to be his last dance after all. As for Miocic, he has claimed that he sees every fight as his last one. So it is possible that we might get a retirement announcement out of him at the end. But what do you think? Will either of the two fighters announce their retirement at the MSG? Let us know in the comments.
