Conor McGregor has a penchant for riling people up. He does not necessarily restrict this ability from getting in the heads of his opponents. Occasionally, ‘The Notorious’ puts himself at the center of attention with his social media shenanigans.
Recently, the 34-year-old did the same by making a bold claim via his Twitter. What’s interesting is that he has the fans debating in the comment section all because of a simple sentence he wrote.
So what did McGregor say (this time) that has got the fans riled up?

Conor McGregor makes bold claim about title reign
In a recent tweet, Conor McGregor wrote, “I never lost any of my world titles.” Those eight words were all he needed to kickstart a conversation about himself. What’s even more interesting is that McGregor is technically correct.

Although he has not won a title since beating Eddie Alvarez at the historic UFC 205 in New York, McGregor has never lost a title either. How did that happen?
I never lost any of my world titles.
— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) April 22, 2023
‘Mystic Mac’ won his first UFC title at UFC 189, beating Chad Mendes. He became the interim featherweight champion, and later unified it against Jose Aldo to become the undisputed featherweight champion in 2015.
In 2016, he became the first-ever simultaneous two-division UFC champion when he beat Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title. Following the monumental achievement, McGregor drifted off to greener pastures and fought Floyd Mayweather for arguably the biggest paycheck of his career.
The UFC stripped him of the 145 lbs title a month after he won the lightweight title, citing a lack of title defenses. He lost the lightweight title the following year after UFC 223, 15 months after he won it.
Therefore, McGregor “never lost” any of his titles. They were taken from him. However, the fans begged to differ.
Fans react to McGregor’s title claim
While McGregor was having fun with the wordplay, many fans were not willing to entertain him. They brought up the fact that he never got a successful title defense under his belt. To this day, the former ‘champ champ’ faces criticism for not defending his title.
In fact, that is the one blemish that he seems unable to wipe from his title reign. Considering the fact that other ‘champ champ’ fighters like Daniel Cormier and Amanda Nunes defended their titles, McGregor remains the odd one out.
This sentiment is reflected in the responses from the fans as well.
Never defended them either

You’re still a champ in my eyes 🥂
— Mike (@ironmike) April 22, 2023
Go take at least one of them back then.
— Tenacious B (@GoofysConcern) April 22, 2023
Now you get paid to fall down without winning any fights.

How many title defenses you got lil mate
— Pauli.♤ (@MMAPauli) April 22, 2023
Correct! You were stripped for failing to defend them, which is much worse than losing a fight!
— christopher james (@ChrisJamesMMA) April 22, 2023
You didn't defend any of them, either. Then you came back to fight Khabib, the belt holder, and submitted to the champion.
Context is a hell of a thing.

You also aren't in the GOAT conversation for either weight class in which you were champion. That's what happens when you don't defend titles 🤷♂️

How can you lost something you never tried to defend?
