UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones loves the 12-6 elbow, even though the technique is the reason he has one loss on his professional record. However, now that the ban has been lifted, ‘Bones’ has warned that he will be using the technique against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309. But since there’s no ban on the move, can we consider it not as lethal as other moves allowed in the UFC? Well, the answer to that question has been provided by both Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen.
In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Sonnen talked about Jones’ plan to use the 12-6 elbow against Miocic and the champion’s latest viral video where he can be seen practicing the move. Sonnen revealed that while the Association of Boxing Commissions and the Mixed Martial Arts Committee consider the 12-6 elbow to be not as devastating as others believe it to be, he and Jones surely know how destructive it really is.
In fact, Jones has even talked about how good the move is. While revealing his plan to use it in his upcoming fight, ‘Bones’ himself called it a devastating move. And while he could’ve underplayed its effects to avoid another ban on it, Jones decided to speak the truth. Something that has been praised by Sonnen. So in his video, Sonnen lauded the UFC heavyweight champion for his honesty.

He said, “Jon has come out, and he has chosen to steer into this a little bit—and I always like that. And he says, ‘The 12-to-6 is devastating, and I’ve been working on the 12-to-6 in a number of different positions with different setups, and I plan to use it against Stipe because it is such a devastating move.’ And I love that honesty.” Sonnen further added, “Jon himself has spoken up to let you guys know it’s a devastating hold—you never should have legalized it; you never should have held a meeting on the topic of legalizing it. And now, me, I’m appreciative of this.” However, he further asked Jones to be cautious of the angle since any angle apart from 12-6 may provide him with his second disqualification loss.

For a long time, gone were the days of the UFC when the promotion began almost as an experiment in which fighters from different disciplines faced each other to see which was better. The wild times, in which practically everything except biting and poking the eye was allowed. However, with the ban on the 12-6 elbows getting removed, Jon Jones surely plans to make UFC the ultimate brutal sport that it was again. But what about his only loss in the UFC, will that be getting overturned anytime soon? Well, Chael Sonnen has provided his take on it.

Chael Sonnen speaks against the demand to overturn the decision
What’s your perspective on:
Should Jon Jones' only loss be overturned now that the 12-6 elbow is legal?
Have an interesting take?
Ever since the ban got removed off the 12-6 elbow, Jones has been asking the UFC to remove the only loss off of his otherwise undefeated MMA record. The one and only setback from 2009 still haunts the UFC heavyweight champion. As a result, even his fans are demanding that the loss be reversed. However, Chael Sonnen has a different perspective that will undoubtedly disappoint the UFC heavyweight champion.
In a video on his YouTube channel, Sonnen discussed the challenges of changing decisions made more than a decade ago. Furthermore, he hinted that this action would have to be applied across the board, not just to Jon Jones, which further added to the uncertainty. Besides, the UFC legend does not appreciate the concept of Jones being rewarded for an overturned ruling from 15 years ago.

Sonnen said, “The idea of revisiting an established outcome a decade plus later is insane. Just that idea, that a government agency funded by taxpayers would revisit an established outcome from a decade prior. That is insane!” He further added, “To get these repaid, we are not going to revisit Jon Jones and his salary that night and go cut him an extra check because it should not have been this way. We are not going to do any of those things.”
Well, it surely looks like ‘The American Gangster’ is completely against the idea of getting the decision overturned. But what do you think? Should the UFC reverse the decision? Let us know in the comments.
