The story has been told multiple times. A new, faster-on-foot, powerful contender is rising through the ranks and threatens to dislodge Jon Jones from the top. But each one unfolds with a similar ending, with ‘Bones’ brushing aside the contender. This time the challenger is Tom Aspinall, but the narrative has finally worn down the UFC champion. He appears to be frustrated.

The 36-year-old recently took to Twitter, and taking a leaf out of Conor McGregor‘s book, lashed out at his heavyweight rivals. “Everyone’s the next big thing until I beat them,” he declared. Doing a McGregor, he subsequently deleted the tweet. While the fans are used to the Irishman’s shenanigans, Jones’ annoyance is new to them. Now UFC veteran Chael Sonnen has joined the fray.

The former UFC star, in a video uploaded on his YouTube channel, labeled Jones’ action “really weird”. Further, according to him, the heavyweight champion’s reaction was “weak”. Also, the deletion of tweets didn’t amend the act. The tweet wouldn’t disappear as “it’s out there” on the internet.

The 46-year-old added, “Jon [Jones] does get in a position from a narcissistic standpoint where you cannot ask him anything that challenges him. That pushes weird buttons with him.”

Sonnen then amusingly agreed with him as he mentioned Jones’ observations were fair. He continued, “Jon is right. Like that is how it works. You just can’t shake the guy, and you just can’t smack any sense into him.”

However, the MMA fighter-turned-analyst, who once challenged Jones for the light heavyweight gold at UFC 159, blasted him for his behavior. Sonnen suggested the buzz around a newcomer gunning for the throne was business.

Sonnen reprimanded Jones over the basics of the fight business

He said, “That’s the business, you idiot. Like this thing that you’re trying to stop. This thing is that if you had a magic wand and you would make it stop. ‘This isn’t right’. If you don’t have that, you don’t have a business. You don’t have a check when this is done.”

“It’s literally what creates this business, and Jon, as a narcissist, I think he’s the only one that goes through it. Everybody goes through it,” he added later.

Jones has spent almost 15 years in the UFC. He transitioned from a veteran killer and became the one impossible to beat. His move up to heavyweight also met with a similar narrative, as Ciryl Gane was billed as one of his toughest fights. But the fight at UFC 285 merely lasted minutes.

Jones will square off against Stipe Miocic on November 11 at UFC 295 at Madison Square Garden.
