The place of Conor McGregor in UFC history will always be debatable. The first global superstar to emerge out of the promotion’s ranks changed the sports for good. What made him unique? His prodigal skills on the mic, his fighting prowess, and his sway with people. But the more he amassed fame, the more his fighting career got pushed into the background. In 2016, he was a two-division champion, dropping opponents with left hooks. In 2023, he is a rich businessperson, dropping verbal sludge via tweets. How did that happen?

The Irishman is on a two-year layoff since injuring his leg against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. He left the arena on a stretcher, and his record slipped to 1-3 in his last 4 fights. When that happened, his rival, Khabib Nurmagomedov, wasn’t surprised. The Russian fighter knew the downfall was upon ‘The Notorious’ when he released a tweet in 2020 that blasted him. The same tweet has come back to haunt McGregor, as his theatrics remain the same.

Despite his recent inactivity, the 35-year-old fighter never shies away from offering his opinion on any upheaval in the lightweight division. Recently, he engaged with Justin Gaethje and flirted with him for a BMF title fight. “I KO him one shot,” the Dubliner announced. However, these comments sat well neither with the BMF champ nor his manager, Ali Abdelaziz.

Following this, the famed manager, who also managed Nurmagomedov, advised Gaethje against taking a fight against McGregor. Now, he has retweeted Nurmagomedov’s tweet from 2020 to remind the Irish fighter of the harsh reality.

The tweet reads, “you tapped out in featherweight , you tapped out in lightweight and you tapped in welterweight , you never defended title in the UFC or Cage Warriors , you gave up more than GSP , Spider and Bones all together. you greatest @ufc fighter in twitter history.”

Nurmagomedov’s teammate, Belal Muhammad, also followed suit and retweeted the 2020 tweet. Thus, the whole camp is sending a strong message to ‘Mystic Mac’ as the latter continues to chase fights without resolving his USADA troubles.

Has Conor McGregor become a fighter existing merely on the X?

His tweet-and-delete shenanigans sum up his recent relevance to sports apart from the TUF S31. While he is rumored to fight Michael Chandler this year, he has also expressed his desire to move on from the fight.

Following Gaethje, he teased the trilogy fight with Nate Diaz as his boxing debut with Jake Paul drew closer. When ‘The Problem Child’ emerged as a victor, McGregor diverted his attention to the boxer. But in the complete chaos, his comeback still remains a distant reality as of now.
