Jon Jones was probably the happiest guy in January when USADA stopped testing UFC fighters. Once the anti-doping agency was gone, the heavyweight champion demanded that USADA undo the only no-contest of his 27-1-1 NC pro-MMA career so far. Something that he still demands. Maybe that is why he recently took to his Instagram to relive and remind fans of the dark moments in the past that he went through.
Taking to his Instagram story, Jon Jones re-shared a story by Steve Aoki from 2017, where the popular DJ and ‘Bones’ can be seen partying. However, it is worth noting that this concert took place just a few days after Jon Jones received a steroid punishment. It was Jones’ way of telling the anti-doping agency that he didn’t care about their punishments. And it seems like he is reminding fans of the same through the story once again.
The heavyweight legend’s first problem with USADA dates back to 2016 after positives for clomiphene and letrozole, which caused him to be removed from his rematch with Daniel Cormier scheduled for the historic UFC 200. Although the agency suspended Jones for a year, it maintained that the fighter accidentally ingested substances from a contaminated supplement. Jones then made his return to the sport in 2017 by knocking out Cormier in two rounds to capture the 205-pound belt.

However, the next month, USADA announced that ‘Bones’ tested positive for another steroid: turinabol. The New Yorker was stripped of the title and received an 18-month suspension. After serving his suspension, Jon Jones was going to mark his return at UFC 232 in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, the state athletic commission refused to give him a license to fight since the fighter still had traces of the steroid in his system. A ‘picogram,’ to be more exact. That is: a third of a trillion of a gram.

In response, UFC moved the pay-per-view to Los Angeles, California. So it is no wonder that the UFC heavyweight is now reliving those dark days of the USADA on his Instagram. To this day, his NC with Daniel Cormier is one of two spots on the fighter’s impressive record. The other is a disqualification loss (illegal elbows) to Matt Hamill. So what about this single loss in his MMA career? Will he be getting that overturned anytime soon? Well, the UFC boss Dana White did provide his thoughts on it.
Dana White wishes to erase the stain in Jon Jones’ career
The career of Jon Jones (26-1-1) has had many stains that, surely, even the fighter himself would like to erase. Some have to do with his personal life, others with his history at USADA. But there is one that has even provoked Dana White’s anger. We are talking about that fight in 2009, in the final of the 10th TUF season. “Bones” was given a ‘disqualification loss’ in his fight against Matt Hamill for having resorted—almost when he was about to beat his opponent—to a series of illegal elbows. Everyone saw how Jon Jones dominated and won that fight, but rules are rules.

To this day, the UFC president seems to still regret that “loss” in Jones’ record. On the Jim Rome Show, the UFC head honcho said, “I mean realistically—if you look at all the people that he’s fought, he’s never lost a fight. It kills me that that one [loss] is on his record. 26-1. You have to understand for the people that don’t know, this was during a time when the Nevada State Athletic Commission was very weak, and there was a referee in there that stopped the fight and called Jones the loser in that fight. A fight he was dominating and should have been finished. Instead of disqualifying Jones, they should have stopped the fight. Jones really should be 27-0.”
Obviously, there are several issues to analyze here. First, the referee of that fight was the “controversial” Steve Mazzagatti. He was known for letting fights go on even when they were ‘butcheries,’ making questionable calls, and even disqualifying fighters seemingly out of the blue. If we analyze the performance of both fighters in that TUF final, the duel was a clear victory for ‘Bones,’ who had almost finished his opponent. However, if we stick to the cold regulations, their elbows were indeed illegal, and the disqualification was excessive but understandable. Today, however, the 6-12 elbows have now been made legal. What do you think? Should the regulation board overturn Jon Jones’s loss?
