Joe Rogan’s remarks on Judge Adelaide Byrd from six years ago became relevant again this past weekend at UFC 310. Sat͏urda͏y͏ night at the T-͏Mob͏ile A͏rena ͏delivered some of the most explosive͏ cla͏s͏hes for the finale of the year. However, what upset n͏early ͏everyon͏e was the controversial ͏result of the fig͏ht between Alexander Volkov and Ciryl Ga͏ne. Despite a͏ d͏ominant performance, Volkov suffered ͏a razor-thin def͏eat as A͏delaide Byrd s͏cored the second round of the fig͏ht against him. Even Dana White appeared perple͏xed by the decision as it was anno͏u͏n͏ced. Am͏idst th͏e chaos, a͏ humorous b͏ack͏-and-fo͏rth from a six-year-old UFC event, betwe͏en Jon Ani͏k, Daniel Corm͏ier, and Joe Rogan about Byrd’s͏ scoring has resurfaced, ad͏ding͏ some levity to͏ the heated situat͏ion.͏
A video uploaded by ‘Basedgoodie’ captured the dialogue between the trio from the commentary desk during UFC 222, which took place back in March 2018. Daniel Cormier couldn’t hold his laughter after Rogan’s remark. Byrd’s scorecard from Canelo vs. GGG2 had raised accusations of corruption, and hence Joe’s ‘Ferrari’ comment. Cormier tried to make a positive comment for the judge, “Oh my goodness, she’s a very nice person. She’s a very nice lady. Let’s just leave it at that.” Joe Rogan again chimed in as he said, “So is my mom. I wouldn’t want her to judge any fights. My mom would be like, “Canelo’s handsome.”

A͏delaide Byrd was in the headlines back in 2017 when she gave 118-110 in favour of Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez evoking criticism from the entirety of the sports world. It was such a mishap that then ESPN analyst Teddy Atlas branded some boxing officials “corrupt.” Oscar De La Hoye even came forward to assert that he doesn’t understand the scoring at all, “A lot of people are not understanding 118-110, just like myself. That’s the bottom line.”
The controversy spilled to the streets as the fans demanded answers from Bob Bennett, the executive director of the Nevada Athletic Commission, who was forced to give his statement, “I’m not going to put her right back in. She’ll still be in the business, but she needs to catch her breath.” Byrd took a long break after the match.

This is not the first time she has faced the MMA community’s ire. Clay Guida vs. Marcus Aurelio (2007), Leonard Garcia vs. Nam Phan (2010), Jake Ellenberger vs. Carlos Eduardo Rocha (2011), and Tim Kennedy vs. Roger Gracie (2013) all saw questionable scoring from Byrd. She had an infamous moment in Bryan Caraway’s (whose UFC 222 bout we mentioned above) clash against Aljamain Sterling in May 2016 as well. According to MMA Decisions, Sterling looked like he earned a 10-8 first round while the other two clearly went to Carraway. But Byrd scored a 10-9 for Sterling in the first and gave him the second as well.
Eight years later, her scorecards still leave fans and fighters fuming. Both Alexander Volkov and Dana White have come forward to criticize her.

Dana White and Alexander Volkov issue their statements after A͏delaide Byrd’s scoring debacle

Maybe she liked Ciryl Gane’s body more.”
In addition to that, Dana White at the post-fight press conference answered the questions on the mishap, “Ahh, I thought Volkov won the fight. So here’s what happened after the fight—you heard the boos. I went over to Volkov, I apologized, I thought he won the fight. Then the commission came over and said, ‘Listen, we feel like the second round was really close and could have gone either way. Both guys got rocked. We thought that…’ You know, I can’t remember which one they thought had the worst of it in the second round, but, you know, they are making the argument on why they judged [it] the way it was.”

The judges delivered their verdict—29-28, 28-29, 29-28 in Gane’s favor shocking the entire MMA community. Byrd gave the second round to Gane when both the other judges scored it for Volkov. What’s even more telling is that Gane was leaving the cage when he was announced the winner. It seemed as if he himself knew he had not done enough. During the Octagon interview, he expressed gratitude for the win and disappointment in his performance.
Regardless, sources close to Volkov have emphasized that the fighter has been promised a title shot after Tom Aspinall. Well, what’s your take on the hubbub? State your thoughts in the comments below.
