Joe Rogan has decades of experience with martial arts and he always keeps on proving it. Everyone knows a fighter carries a huge risk of being hurt the wrong way while fighting. Punches to the face kicks to the head, and so much more could render a fighter helpless in real life as well as inside the cage. All it takes is one grave injury!

The podcaster recently sat down with UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley and his coach Tim Welch. This episode of The Joe Rogan Experience became pretty much focused on the UFC and things around combat sports, especially the threat of injuries in the UFC world.

Joe Rogan talks about concussions and Israel Adesanya

On the MMA Show episode #147 of the podcast, Rogan and his guests were talking about smelling salts. The trio had taken a fresh whiff of the substance themselves and felt the shock that comes with it. It was then that they discussed the topic of concussions and how they could affect an athlete’s performance in the cage.

Concussions are common in the UFC. Every other serious blow to the head could cause one. Rogan explained how having a concussion could put a fighter on auto-pilot where they just fight through the rounds. After the fight, they may not even remember what happened. In fact, Rogan explains how Israel Adesanya likely suffered a concussion in his last match against Sean Strickland.

“Okay, Adesanya vs Strickland,” Rogan started, “that first round when he got cracked. High likelihood of concussion. 100% chance. I mean he got dropped, spun around, and then 1 2 3, how many left hands did he hit him with . . . you gotta think he’s dinged after that fight. And when you said his arms felt like rubber and like, how much of that was a factor?”

Clearly, Rogan has had experience with fighters who get ticked off early in the rounds. Getting a concussion in the very first round may have caused the downfall of ‘Izzy’. Rogan makes a good point on how the severe concussion could have led to Adesanya’s breaking defense.

Rogan’s thoughts about concussions add up

It’s true that concussions are a grave injury. In fact, enough of those could even cause long-term damage. In the short term, they could loosen up the fighter’s thought process for good. In fact, if Rogan is to be believed, it could even make fighters forget things.

“. . . how many times has a fighter been cracked early in a fight and then you see they’re still dealing with that later in the fight and afterwards they don’t even remember the fight.”

While this was not the case for Adesanya, the risk is still as real as it gets. The fighters are exposed to all sorts of risks inside the cage and we all must take a moment to appreciate their tenacity.

Now, the question that has the fans talking is, would Izzy’s concussion play any role in his upcoming bout? Let us know your thoughts.
