Will Trump's presence at UFC 309 boost the event's excitement, or is it just political theater?

Among the many accolades that come with being a high-level fighter, apart from winning a title, being acknowledged by a President is high on that list. The newly elected 47th POTUS, Donald Trump’s love for MMA is no secret to fight fans, and well before the election, Trump boldly claimed on JRE that he would attend UFC 309 at Madison Square Garden – “I’ll be there as president, or I’ll be depressed and won’t bother going”. Though the news hasn’t been confirmed, rumors are swirling about the POTUS’s potential appearance, with speculation that he could even wrap the belt around the winner of the headliner fight. For ex-champ Stipe Miocic, these rumors come as a pleasant surprise and also added motivation to win back the title against Jon Jones at UFC 309.

In an interview with TMZ Sports interview, ‘Stone Cold’ was asked about the possibility of President Donald Trump wrapping the heavyweight belt around his waist. Intrigued but unsure about the New York native’s appearance at Madison Square Garden, Miocic said, “I’m not against it. That’d be kind of cool to have the President do that. President-elect, yeah. Oh, he’s going to be there, right? Yeah, he’s going to be. I mean, yeah, I’m down.” Despite speculation surrounding Donald Trump’s appearance at UFC 309, the confirmation of his attendance at the Madison Square Garden event is yet to be made.

However, it seems increasingly likely that the newly elected president will make a grand entrance at the event. This year, much of Donald Trump’s success, beyond his media appearances, can be attributed to his symbiotic relationship with the UFC, its boss, Dana White, and its target demographic of young men. Their 20+ year friendship has proved mutually beneficial – Trump helping save the UFC by hosting two events back in 2001, and White playing a significant role in the New York native’s political comeback. However, despite his long-standing friendship with Trump, Dana White has no desire to be involved in the 47th president’s administration.

Known for his loyalty, Dana White has always supported those who stood by him and his once-struggling UFC brand. Among those he values the most is Donald Trump, who played a crucial role in UFC’s growth in the early days when the organization faced significant criticism in the sports world. Taking a chance at the burgeoning sport, Trump offered his venues for White to host UFC events and believed in the sport’s potential when no one else would.

Now, years later, as Donald Trump faces legal challenges, White has shown unwavering loyalty, inviting him to UFC 302 in New Jersey just days after POTUS was found guilty on 34 counts. In each of his UFC appearances this year, Trump received a warm welcome from attending fans. White made it clear that his support for Trump is purely out of friendship, not for political gain. While some have speculated that Dana White’s actions are politically motivated, he insists they come from genuine loyalty, as seen when he joined Trump at the victory celebration at Palm Beach Convention Center.

However, with the ever-growing popularity of mixed martial arts, Dana White has his hands full with the UFC. Despite being a vocal supporter of Trump, and speaking at his rallies, the UFC head honcho doesn’t seem interested in a political career.
