Will McGregor's half-million bet on Holloway and Whittaker pay off, or is he dreaming big?

Conor McGregor is never one to shy away from a bold prediction, and UFC 308 was no exception. Relaxing on his luxurious yacht, ‘The Notorious’ made his final picks for the main and co-main events—and he didn’t just make a casual bet. The Irishman upped the stakes with a whopping half a million dollars on the line. What else would you expect from the man who redefined what it means to be a UFC superstar?

In classic McGregor fashion, he took to social media to share his predictions. McGregor stated in a video shared on his Instagram story, “Ladies and gentlemen, here’s my picks for the evening. Duelbits, no. 1 odds in the game, Max Holloway, Robert Whittaker, KO victories. Max Holloway, inside the first half of the fight. Robert Whittaker, inside the second half of the fight. Half a million US dollars.”

Naturally, half a million dollars on the line is no small gamble, but McGregor is anything but cautious when it comes to high-stakes moves. This isn’t the first time ‘Mystic Mac’ has thrown big money behind his confidence as recently he placed a massive wager on the outcome of Francis Ngannou’s MMA comeback at PFL Superfights: Battle of The Giants!

Ngannou was taking on Renan Ferreira at the event, and the Irishman had boldly proclaimed on social media, “Tonight’s bet for me. 500k on Ferreira to win by KO at 12/5 $1.7m return”. What happened next? Well, unfortunately for McGregor, ‘The Predator’ ran through Ferreira in the very first round by taking him down and closing out the show with vicious ground and pound.

But if there’s one thing Conor McGregor does best, is to stay confident. After the outcome, he took to social media yet again to share, “The Rich Get Richer, I’ll Get That Back.” It remains to be seen if UFC 308 leads to a different outcome for the ‘The Notorious’s wager. After all, he and Holloway have a long history together, and it’d make sense why he’d be rooting for the Hawaiian. In fact, he didn’t just predict Holloway’s victory, he gave a detailed breakdown of the matchup and why he believes in ‘Blessed’!

McGregor gives his breakdown for Holloway vs Topuria at UFC 308 with a cryptic hint

As UFC 308 approached, McGregor didn’t just sit back and watch. He took to the spotlight once again, offering his thoughts on Holloway’s upcoming clash with Ilia Topuria. With the weigh-ins looming, McGregor made it clear that a lot rides on how Holloway looks after shedding pounds for the featherweight limit of 145 lbs. The Irishman, having gone through those grueling weight cuts himself in his rise to stardom, knew all too well what Holloway could be facing as he stated, “You know, he looked great at 155 pounds, won the BMF title and now he’s gone back down to 145 pounds. It’s tough. I’ve done it.”

With Holloway making the weight comfortably, McGregor also shared his breakdown of the fight by stating, “Ilia will need to rely on his wrestling at some stage and that won’t be a good look for the crowd. That won’t be a good look at how he is speaking. I fancy Holloway to catch him.”

But here’s where things get interesting, the Irishman ended his breakdown by stating, “Good fight, I look forward to it, MY OWN WORLD TITLE.” Could this be a sign of things to come? Or is McGregor just teasing the fanbase? It’s hard to tell, as his last stint at 145 lbs. was at UFC 194 in 2015 when he took the belt from Jose Aldo. Even his long-awaited and eventually canceled bout against Michael Chandler was scheduled for 170 lbs.

Now, with all signs indicating the earliest we’ll see McGregor in the Octagon will be in 2025, all the MMA sphere can do is wait. But with UFC 308 featuring incredible fights and McGregor’s picks already set, do you think this time the Irishman will be able to rake in big from his bets?
