Khabib Nurmagomedov has one of the greatest MMA records of all time. He has a list of defeated opponents that most fighters can only dream of having on their resumes. However, ‘The Eagle’ never got the chance to battle Tony Ferguson, who recently trolled him on Instagram with a reference to a popular anime.

Tony Ferguson’s social media antics are well-documented. He is regarded as one of UFC’s most versatile fighters. Ferguson has had an illustrious career. Moreover, he even become the interim lightweight champion once but got stripped of it due to injury. Since then, he has never tasted gold in the promotion.

Tony Ferguson trolls Khabib Nurmagomedov in Pokemon style

Using the feature to ask questions in Instagram stories, a fan reminded Tony Ferguson of the unfortunate fact that he couldn’t fight for the title against Khabib Nurmagomedov. The fan said, “Khabib rent free in your head.” However, Tony Ferguson was quick to clap back at the fan. He shared a couple of stories of his own, one of which had Ferguson citing the popular anime Pokemon.

The former interim champion shared a video of him throwing a Pokeball at Nurmagomedov, who was supposed to be a Pokemon. The video had subtitles that wrote, “Ferguson tries to capture Khabib. Will El Cucuy Succeed??? or Will Khabib escape???.”

Ferguson added a caption to the video he shared that read, “Holy sh*t. Almost F***in’ Forgot What Day It Is!!! What A Gomer CSO.” This is by no means his first jab at Khabib Nurmagomedov. He previously had some words to say about ‘The Eagle’ after he retired.

How did Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson go down as the ‘most cursed fight’ in UFC?

The UFC tried to book a fight between the two for five times. But none of the bookings ever materialized. The first time when Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson were scheduled for a fight, was on the card of the season finale of ‘The Ultimate Fighter 22’. However, ‘The Eagle’ had to pull out from a fight due to a rib injury sustained during training.

The second attempt at materializing the fight between them ended due to Ferguson having blood and fluids in his lung. It got canceled just eleven days before they were scheduled to fight at UFC on FOX. The third failed attempt took place at UFC 209. Nurmagomedov’s weight-cutting process left him in a medical predicament. He had to be hospitalized just 24 hours before the scheduled event. Moreover, the fight had the interim UFC lightweight title up for grabs.

The bout was booked for the fourth time in 2018, but the fans didn’t get to see the showdown as Ferguson tripped over a production cable and had to undergo surgery on his lateral collateral ligament. Finally, for the fifth time, the bout was booked in 2020. But as the world came to a standstill due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the bout too fell apart, yet again, with the MMA gods laughing from the skies.
