Without a doubt, Islam Makhachev is one of the best fighters to grace the octagon. It was all Islam Makhachev vs Alexander Volkanovski, at UFC 284 fight-night! At the event, Makhachev successfully defended his lightweight title, which proved to be his toughest fight yet. What’s more- the Russian fighter stepped into the fight as the betting favorite against the Featherweight champ. Fans were polarized, following the outcome of the bout with some believing the Aussie deserved to win, while others were all praise for Makhachev’s strength.

But recent insights from Daniel Cormier aka ‘DC’, the former heavyweight champ, revealed an intriguing side to the UFC 284 glory for Makhachev. ‘DC’ said that although the Russian fighter took home the number 1 pound-for-pound spot, prior to the fight, the Russian camp seemed to be the ‘worried party’. But why would his own camp have doubts about his potential? Is it because of what Khabib had to say, ahead of the fight? Let’s find out.

Taking to Instagram to upload a video, ‘DC’ shared some interesting insights about the UFC 284 bout. Contrary to popular opinion, Cormier felt ‘The Great’ had a real shot at defeating Makhachev – who had just burst into UFC fame after his victory over Charles ‘Do Bronx’ Oliveira.

“No one and I mean no one, gave Volkanovski a chance to beat Islam, especially after the way Islam defeated Charles ‘Do Bronx’ Olivera to become the champion.”

Many dismissed ‘Volk’s chances, but he was confident that it’d be a more competitive fight than what people expected. Even Islam seemed to brush off Volkanovski’s claims, almost laughing at the suggestion. But the one guy who wasn’t surprised at the suggestion was ‘The Eagle’ – Khabib Nurmagomedov. ‘DC’ confirmed that during one of their private conversations, the 34-year-old had expressed his concerns about the fight, addressing the tough challenge Makhachev would face.

“But to anyone that would listen, Alexander Volkanovski said it was going to be much more competitive and it was going to be a much better fight than people thought it would. And Islam almost laughed him off!”

“Let me tell you who was not surprised though- Khabib Nurmagomedov. He told me privately – ‘I worry about this fight. It’s tough for Islam.’ The whole team knew it would be very tough. People still had him ranked number one in the world, pound-for-pound!”

Ranking as the number one pound-for-pound fighter, Mahkachev proved that his victory was surely no fluke. Sharing his own views, Cormier concluded that UFC 284 showcased an exceptional display of skill between two highly talented fighters. For ‘DC’, a great fight could either be a slugfest or “it also can be two of the most skilled guys in the world competing at a level not many can match.” The fight lived up to its hype, and Makachev cemented his status as a top-tier athlete.

“But let’s not mistake what we saw. We saw Makhachev win. A good fight can be a knockdown drag-out or it also can be two of the most skilled guys in the world competing at a level not many can match. And I believe that’s exactly what we got at UFC 284.”
