As Dana’s mother, June had a front-row seat to the transformation her son underwent. She recalls how, as a young man, Dana was hardworking and driven, but also kind and compassionate. However, as he ascended to the top of the mixed martial arts world, Dana’s personality began to change. He became more distant and, according to June, less understanding of others’ perspectives and feelings.
Despite the challenges they faced, June remains proud of Dana’s achievements. Moreover, she’s also proud of the impact he has had on the world of mixed martial arts. However, she also hopes that her son will take the time to reflect on the person he has become and make an effort to reconnect with the values and qualities that once defined him.
June White’s urge to get the old Dana White back was not well received
June white mentions that as she began to observe the changes in White’s behavior, she sent him an email. It was a plea to reclaim his old son to feel empathy and comfort.
She said, “I assumed he would at least think about what I had said and about what it was, he was doing. But his response was the furthest thing from stepping back and thinking about what I had just told him.”
However, the response she got was quite shocking, to say the least. According to her, the UFC president replied, “Who the f**k do you think you are, talking to me like that? No one talks to me that way.”
June White recalls what caused the rift
This shift in behavior caused a rift between Dana and his mother, and the two began to drift apart. June writes that she struggled to understand the changes she saw in her son. Moreover, she felt hurt by his lack of empathy and consideration.
She said, “I was so angered by his replies. My blood pressure had to be at stroke level. We did not speak for an extended period after that. This was the upshot of the changes in my son, and it seems to me partly due to a mythology that grew up around him and that he did nothing to correct.”
“It is time to set the record straight about who Dana White was and who he has become,” she further added.

Ultimately, June’s book serves as a reminder that success can bring about significant changes in a person’s life. And that it is important to stay true to one’s values and relationships, even in the face of great success. So, it is always better to remain grounded and humble no matter how successful one becomes.
