Who is Jeff Novitzky?

Novitzky is a Special Agent by profession. It also won’t be wrong to say that he is one of the most famous Special Agents in the entire US. Born on 15 December 1967 in Burlingame, California, Novitzky has handled multiple high-profile cases in the sports industry.

In the past, he worked as an agent for the Food and Drug Administration. His primary task was to investigate the usage of performance-enhancing drugs(PEDs) in varsity sports. Prior to April 2008, he also worked as a special agent for the Internal Revenue Service. Novitzky spent more than five years there investigating the usage of steroids.

Novitzky’s background in sports is probably the reason behind his choice to enter the field of sports as a Special Agent. He has also played collegiate basketball for Skyline College. But, he could only take the court once in his sophomore season due to a few major injuries. Following this, he transferred to San Jose University. However, he could only play a couple of games for them in the 1989-90 season once again due to his known foe, injuries.

As already mentioned, Novitzky also holds a position without which the UFC cannot function smoothly. Currently, ‘the California native’ serves as the Vice President of the Athlete Health and Performance department of the promotion.

Well, it won’t be wrong to say that defaulting athletes might find it pretty hard to escape his eyes now that he holds such a crucial post in the promotion. The UFC boss, Dana White, has been quite impressed with Novitzky’s superb achievements. He has also given a noteworthy nickname to Novitzky due to his brilliant investigation of drug usage by a world record-holding US athlete.

The ’54-year-old’ Novitzky’s investigation regarding the drug usage of noted US cyclist, Lance Armstrong helped him secure his crucial position at the UFC in 2015. He has also helped in the development of one of the most thorough anti-doping procedures in professional sports.

Jeff Novitsky ‘The Golden Snitch’: From taking down Lance Armstrong to cleaning up the UFC

While the rest of the world called him ‘The Golden Snitch’. A nickname coined by the noted former UFC Heavyweight, Brendan Schaub. White labeled him as “the guy who took down Lance Armstrong”. Notably, Armstrong holds a world record of winning the prestigious Tour de France cycling race seven times consecutively from 1999 to 2005.

Novitzky led the group of Federal Investigators who looked into Armstrong’s case before the USADA’s involvement in it. The federal prosecutors officially dropped their investigation with no charges. But, it actually opened up the narrative that something might be wrong with Armstrong. This investigation also prompted the USADA to take an interest in the issue, which eventually resulted in Armstrong’s confession of his misconduct of using PEDs.

In a January 2013 interview with the noted Oprah Winfrey, Armstrong confessed his guilt of using PEDs during much of his career. He also said he used them during his championship run of 1999-2005 as well. Hence, a number of fans might say that the nickname given to Novitzky by White holds quite well.

In an interview with BBC, Novitzky broke down the reasons why every athlete needed to be tested at regular intervals. He described how the athletes appreciated this move. He said, “Most of our fighters see and realize ‘Hey, I don’t have to worry now about what I’m doing to keep up with my opponent. Because of what I’m subject to. Testers can come to my house at any time and my opponent is subject to that too’.”
