Does Adam Blair Pryde's support make Angela Hill an even more formidable force in the UFC?

UFC women’s strawweight star Angela Hill may not have won a UFC title (yet). Despite this, ‘Overkill’ holds more records than any other female UFC fighters you care to name. Not only is the 39-year-old a record machine but is also one of the most experienced female MMA fighters in the world. In the women’s bantamweight division of the UFC the ‘Ultimate Fighter’ alum has more fights than anyone else with 24 appearances. This is why it is not surprising that she has the most wins at eleven in the division, too.

Her journey has not been easy. She was, after all, cut from the promotion in 2015 after only two fights! Nevertheless, the Maryland native was not content with being remembered as a UFC reject and was determined to redeem herself. A year and four consecutive wins at Invicta later, the New York resident did precisely that. In 2017 she was called back to the Dana White-led promotion. And that is where she has been ever since, being one of the more active fighters and breaking record while she is at it. And by her side throughout her journey is her husband and nutritionist, Adam Blair Pryde, who is as integral a part of her professional life as her personal life.

Angela Hill met her future husband Adam Blair Pryde by pure chance, half a world away. Fresh out of High School, ‘Overkill’, as many fresh graduates, went on a vacation overseas in 2006 — to Japan to be exact. Needless to say Hill was unaware she would meet the love of her life her there.

In the historic, imperial Japanese capital city of Kyoto is the first time she met Pryde. Pretty soon they started dating and fell in love, continuing their relationship back home in America. After three years, they knew they were meant for each other and tied the knot in a ceremony in an intimate ceremony in New York City’s City Hall.

Since Pryde is a nutritionist and his wife is a professional athlete, she naturally is his most important client. Not only does he make sure ‘Overkill’ gets the diet required of an elite athlete such as herself, but also helps her cut weight efficaciously for her fights.

But his nutritionist duties are just one of the many roles he plays in Hill’s career. The American doubles as Hill’s sparring partner, travel companion, and sometimes cornerman when he is not busy helping her game plan for whoever she’s fighting next.

Angela Hill’s unorthodox martial arts journey

As we have mentioned, he has been with her from before she started fighting or even training, really, and has seen every step of her unique martial arts journey. Angela Hill was always of an artistic bend. Naturally she got an Art degree from the prestigious Cooper Union College in New York, before she started working as an animator in a studio. It was during this time that she started training in martial arts, starting off with Muay Thai, mostly because she enjoyed it. At first.

The 2008 financial crash saw many companies laying off employees, including the animation studio Hill worked at. This led her to taking her martial arts more seriously and think about being a fighter. After an impressive, undefeated run in the amateur Muay Thai circuit, Hill took the leap and went pro in 2013. The very next year, she quit the sport forever. Why? Because she got a call from the UFC, the world’s largest most prestigious combat sports promotion in the world. The call was for her to come on their flagship reality show, ‘The Ultimate Fighter’. Needless to say, she accepted, and the rest, as they say, is history.
