Imagine being the bedrock of a moment upon which the entire UFC was built—that’s Craig Piligian. Back in the 2000s, the UFC struggled to make its way onto the screens of everyday Americans. Then came Piligian with a proposition that the UFC’s CEO simply couldn’t refuse. In Dana White’s own words, “Reality shows were a thing back then.” And Piligian came forward to help White and Lorenzo Fertitta develop the unscripted series that would become the smash hit “The Ultimate Fighter” and it appears that after decades Piligian has been awarded at UFC 311.
“Craig Piligian is one of the most influential and respected executives in the history of television. Craig was instrumental in shaping ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ into one of the most important unscripted television shows in sports and helping make UFC a global phenomenon. It will be an honor to induct him into the UFC Hall of Fame this summer,” said UFC President & CEO Dana White.
Yes, Piligian’s contribution to promoting MMA on the global stage was such a master move that it pulled UFC out of the closure. Credited as the co-creator of the show, Piligian’s Pilgrim Media Group helped the UFC launch the first season of TUF on Jan. 17, 2005, on Spike TV. At the season finale, Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar went to war with each other helping put the UFC on the map.
