One of the most prolific fighters in the welterweight division, Gilbert Burns, has earned his way to the top. The Brazilian fighter failed to claim the UFC title in his sole endeavor against the former champion, Kamaru Usman. However, the MMA fighter remains hopeful of taking the title to Rio next year. Notably, the submission grappler has gained a reputation as a fearsome finisher in the promotion.

What is Gilbert Burns’ UFC record?

Gilbert Burns holds an impressive 20-5 record in his professional MMA career. ‘Durinho’ made his UFC debut in July 2014 and announced himself on the biggest MMA stage with a win.

Significantly, the submission artist made his amateur MMA debut when a promoter approached Burns’ gym to replace a fighter in the upcoming fight. Not only did the young fighter accept the fight, but he also claimed victory. Afterward, Burns turned pro and made his professional debut in 2012.

Win streak of Gilbert Burns

The BJJ ace had a splendid run that stretched from UFC 231 in Dec 2018 and continued till his fateful title opportunity against ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ at UFC 258 in Feb 2021. Notably, the 36-year-old won 6 fights on the trot and this run propelled him to the status of title challenger.

However, his run ended with a TKO loss, and, therefore, failed to claim the title that was in his grasp.

The Rio-born fighter earned memorable victories that included a decision win against Gunnar Nelson, followed by a brutal TKO win against Demian Maia. Later on, he had another dominant display against Tyron Woodley, therefore securing the win via decision.

Burns additionally was awarded the ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus for the powerful outings against Mai and Woodley.

Gilbert Burns’ losses in UFC

Sanford MMA team representative has lost only 5 times in the Octagon and strikingly never lost the fight via submission. The first of those 5 losses came against the Russian fighter Rashid Magomedov in Nov 2015, followed by another decision loss against Michel Prazeres in Sept 2016.

The UFC veteran Dan Hooker handled Burns his third UFC defeat and notably his first via TKO at UFC 226 in July 2018. Afterward, the 20-5 record holder went on a 6-0 record, and his juggernaut halted in Las Vegas at UFC 258 by another TKO loss against Usman.

While the noted MMA fighter bounced back from this loss, he again suffered a decision loss against the UFC star on rising, Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 273.

Burns’ grappling record

As a noted submission grappler, who had to struggle in his childhood because of both financial and health issues, Burns dictated the world stage. In addition to bursting on the grappling stage in 2007 with a silver in the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, he followed with another silver in 2009.

Burns finally converted silver into gold at the 2011 world championship.

Furthermore, the former UFC title contender won gold in the 2010 and 2013 World No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu Championship in California.

The last of his submission honors came in 2015 when Burns won bronze at ADCC.
