UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley used to find MMA “disgusting”. It might be hard for many to believe that the rainbow-haired ‘Sniper,’ who has become one of the biggest stars in the UFC did not like the sport when he was a kid. O’Malley would recount in an interview that his father and two brothers were fans of the UFC. His mother, however, had expressly forbidden them to watch the violent sport, which led his father and brothers to watch UFC events secretly.

Sean, who disliked the sport at the time since he found it too violent, would go and tattle to his mother, causing family disputes. Regardless, he has come a long way since, falling in love with the sport and going on to become a UFC champion. As he sets up to defend his bantamweight title for the first time against Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera at UFC 299 next month, we take a look at his journey.

Sean O’Malley is the second of four children and has two brothers, Mykel and Daniel, and a sister, Mashayla, the youngest. Born in the city of Helena, Montana, his father is a retired narcotics police officer.

All four O’Malley siblings were into sports, with his elder brother Mykel having played football and soccer, Daniel, three years younger than Sean, playing basketball, and Mashayla being a state basketball champion. Sean, however, is the most successful of all of them, having played baseball, basketball, and football in school before taking up mixed martial arts.

His younger brother Daniel is a sports enthusiast and does a weekly combat sports and entertainment show with Sean called ‘The Bro Malley Show’ on the latter’s YouTube channel. Mykel, the oldest, however, was a troubled youth and fell into drug addiction and substance abuse, estranging himself from the family and recounting his experiences with Sean and Daniel on an episode of the ‘BrO Malley Show’ two years ago.

This led Mykel down the dark path of drug addiction, which distanced him from the family. Sean revealed that he made it a point to not talk to him since he was afraid he was going to die soon. “I was like, this m******er is going to die… I remember for years, like I didn’t talk to you. I made it to where if dad called me and said you’d died, I wouldn’t have been as emotional because I hadn’t talked to you for so long and you were so fed up,” he said.
