Did Jon Jones make the right call leaving Jackson Wink, or was it a rash decision?

Jon Jones is the consensus MMA GOAT and his accolades throughout the years have proved just that. While most of the credit goes to Jones himself and his individual brilliance, creativity, and dynamism, his team’s role cannot be ignored.

The heavyweight champ, of course, has lived and trained most of his fighting career in New Mexico under head coach Greg Jackson, who has been integral in making ‘Bones’ the fighter he is today, even if he doesn’t directly train under him anymore. As Jones gears up for what is expected to be his last-ever fight, let us take a look at his training situation.

Where does UFC champ Jon Jones train?

Jon Jones currently trains at Greg Jackson’s affiliate gym- Jackson’s MMA Acoma gym in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The two-division champ moved to this gym in 2021 after splitting from his longtime stomping ground, the Jackson Wink MMA gym, which is also located in the same city as his current gym.

In addition, prior to making his comeback in 2023 at heavyweight after three years of inactivity, the GOAT contender also trained with and under former two-division concurrent UFC champ and Olympic gold medallist, Henry Cejudo at the latter’s Fight Ready gym in Scottsdale, Arizona.

However, Jones’s primary training ground is still Jackson Acoma, where he trains under coach Brandon Gibson. It is also worth noting that during his three-year layoff, Jones lived and trained with powerlifter Stan Efferding, who helped him bulk up to contend in the UFC’s heaviest division.

Why was Jon Jones banned from Jackson Wink MMA?

Jon Jones trained at the Jackson Wink gym for most of his fighting career, having started there in 2009, and continued there for over a decade. In 2021, however, he split with that gym and moved to a sister gym that also bears coach Greg Jackson’s name. The reason for this split was that Jones was (temporarily) suspended from Jackson Wink.

This suspension was handed out by co-owner Mike Winklejohn after Jones was arrested on domestic violence charges in September 2021. Winklejohn went public with his reason for suspending Jones, and revealed that he wanted his “little brother” Jones “to stop drinking and fix these things for a certain period of time” as a condition to “come back to the gym.”

While this suspension was temporary, it incensed Jones so much that he went on a tirade, blasting “miserable bas***d” Winklejohn for airing his dirty laundry in public. In fact, so incensed was Jones that he never returned to the Jackson Wink gym even after the ban was lifted, moving to Jackson MMA Acoma in the same city, where he currently trains. What do you think about Jon Jones’ training situation?
