Li Jingliang's rise in UFC—Is he the next big thing from China in MMA?

Wi͏th ͏a rec͏o͏rd of 19 vi͏ctor͏ies and͏ 8 defeats͏, Li Jingliang ha͏s ha͏d one of t͏͏he most ͏uniqu͏e jo͏urne͏y͏s͏ t͏͏o the top͏ stage͏ of the ͏UFC. A͏lso͏͏ ͏known͏ ͏as͏ ‘Th͏e Leech, J͏͏i͏ngliang wa͏s͏ n͏ot int͏e͏rest͏ed in mar͏tial ͏arts growi͏ng up, bu͏t now his entir͏e life ͏r͏ev͏olves ͏aroun͏d͏ ͏MMA.͏His fascination with Bruce Lee, helped the fighter to get closer to the disciples of MMA. His dedication has helped him from being a normal farmer boy to becoming a reputed star in MMA.

Well, the ‘Leech’ has been with the promotion for quite a long time now and a question has been coming to the minds of the fans, where is Li Jingliang from? Ahead of his upcoming clashes, let us have a deeper look at J͏͏i͏ngliang’s origins.

Born in a small town near Tacheng in the Xinjiang UAR of Northwest China, Jingling’s childhood was surrounded by the tales of his villages. The welterweight star was never interested in MMA growing up until he made Bruce Lee his idol. The fighter often jokes around that, he “would have become a farmer,” if it weren’t for his parents as well as his first coach who saw tremendous skill in him.

The Chinese fighter currently resides in Beijing, China, where he trains under the tutelage of China’s Top Team. Li Jingliang made his professional debut back on May 24, 2014, at UFC 173 against David Michaud. Michaud was undefeated when he fought against Jingliang but his undefeated streak was about to be broken as ‘Leech’ clinched the victory by way of a unanimous decision. “I was born into a rural family, and I loved that countryside,” said Li Jingliang in a conversation with the UFC. The Chinese fighter’s family were generational farmers, ‘Leech’ often makes jokes that “If it weren’t for sports, I would have been a farmer now.”  Most of his early life has been spent in the field of Tacheng. “My parents were farmers and they took me to work in the fields when I was a child.”

He further emphasized his love for farming, “Ever since I was old enough to be sensible, I have loved farming. I love that feeling.” Well, his fighting career helped him attain massive wealth not only for himself but also for his family. The Chinese fighter is married and has two kids, however, no information is there about them as Jingliang likes to keep his personal life hidden.
