Fighting has been a part of Leon Edwards‘ life since he was a kid. ‘Rocky’ spent his earliest years up in Kingston, the capital of the picturesque Caribbean island of Jamaica, before moving to England. As a small child, he was surrounded by poverty, violence, and crime.

The 32-year-old would go on to overcome all of this to finally become the welterweight champion of the UFC by defeating Kamaru Usman, one of the most dominant and scary fighters in UFC history. However, one common question fans have about ‘Rocky’ is whether he is British or Jamaican.

Is Leon Edwards Jamaican or English?

Leon Edwards holds British citizenship. He grew up in poverty in a one-room house in his native Kingston, Jamaica. ‘Rocky’ told ESPN in an interview that this house was a wooden shack with a zinc roof. When he was nine years old, he moved with his family to the city of Birmingham in the West Midlands region of England.

But, instead of improving their lives after moving to England, it actually gave him the biggest loss of his career. Edwards’ father was shot and killed in a nightclub in Birmingham when he was 13 years old. Pretty soon, the teenage Edwards went down a pretty dark road, getting involved in a life of crime by dealing drugs, street fighting, and knife possession.

However, his mother was instrumental in getting him to turn his life around and got him enrolled in an MMA gym at the age of 16. ‘Rocky’ took to the sport like a fish to water and made his professional MMA debut two years later, in 2010.

He went on to become one of the best fighters in the world and is looking to cement his legacy now. The Kingston native has said he wants to become the sixth concurrent two-division champion in the UFC after his UFC 296 clash against Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington.

Edwards wants to fight for the middleweight title after Covington

Edwards will defend his welterweight title for the second time against Colby Covington at UFC 296 next month. However, ‘Rocky’ seems uninterested in defending his title after this. He has talked about wanting to fight the winner of the UFC 297 middleweight title bout between champion Sean Strickland and Dricus Du Plessis for a chance to become a double champion.

“I feel like that would be perfect. Me going out and becoming double champion, the first ever from the UK to do it. That’s definitely one of my goals,” the welterweight champion said in an interview with Sky Sports. Do you think Leon Edwards should fight for the middleweight title after UFC 296?
