Even before he started (and excelled in) wrestling in high school, Bobby Green had been fighting. Fighting against the adverse conditions of his life, after he was placed in foster care at the tender age of five. Fighting against poverty and scarcity to take care of his children, which brought him to mixed martial arts.
And now Green fights for the most popular and competitive combat sports promotion in the world, the UFC, where he is one of the well-respected fighters in the stacked lightweight division. Always ready to scrap, the California native has an exciting, striking-first fighting style which has made him a must-watch TV for fans anytime he fights. However, none of this may have been possible if he hadn’t found the gym he trains at.

‘King’ also takes advice from Jamall Emmers and Sergio Guerrero in order to improve his skills. His training partners include some of the best fighters from different promotions. He trains with Greg Guzman, Reuben Duran, Willie Gates, and Rick James. Not only did the Pinnacle Gym provide Green with a place to sharpen his skills, but it was also where he found his father.
Meet Jacob Behney: Green’s coach and foster father
Bobby Green’s father went to jail and his mother struggled with drug addiction. Because of this, he became a ward of the state at the age of five, as his parents were not in a condition to take care of him. However, Green found his father in his coach Jacob Behney. While nothing is known about Behney’s early life, parents, or siblings, it is known that he grew up in a middle-class home in Ohio. After graduating high school, he enrolled in an engineering course. But, he fell into substance abuse, which led him to ultimately drop out of college and start doing odd jobs to try and make ends meet.

A baseball player in high school and college, Behney eventually fell in love with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He would go on to find the Pinnacle MMA, which was where he met Green. The duo hit it off immediately, and became incredibly close, to the point that Green calls Behney his father, and Behney considers ‘King’ his son.
Green has spoken at length about how much Behney and his love and support mean to him, calling him his ‘dad’ in an emotional post-fight interview in 2020. “This is my dad here, Jacob Benny. He’s been there since the beginning. He’s done everything. He’ll lay his life down for me, I’ll lay my life down for him,” Green would tell Clay Guida with tears streaming down his face.
