Lerone Murphy’s journey as a professional athlete initially started as a footballer. The promising youngster had tried out for Liverpool F.C. and even trained with Stockport County and FC United when he was a teenager. But, fate had other plans. When Murphy was 16, he suffered a serious knee injury that marked the end of his football aspirations.
But this is where things took a turn. Instead of football, Murphy found himself being drawn to the world of combat sports. In fact, he already had a connection to the world of boxing being the nephew of renowned boxing trainer, Oliver Harrison. For those unaware, Harrison was responsible for training names like Amir Khan, who won the silver medal in boxing as a lightweight at the 2004 Olympics and was incredibly successful in his professional career as well.
Murphy started his MMA journey at the All Powers gym in 2013 and trained there till 2019. It was established by Panicos Yusuf in 2011 and under the watchful eyes of the head coach and 3-time world champion, Murphy began building his MMA skills. In an interview with Manchester Evening News, Murphy stated, “I enjoyed the kick-boxing – the grappling and stuff was new to me, but it was kind of a challenge, I enjoyed being one of the worst in the gym and trying to change that.”
