Joe Rogan has enjoyed over two decades at the top of not only MMA but the comic world too. His persistence and perseverance paid off as he established himself as a household name. But the UFC commentator saw more downs than ups while he tried to make a name for himself as a standup comic. The comedian juggled multiple jobs, including teaching martial arts and selling newspapers. The money was hard to come by as he was steering his career as a comic.

The 55-year-old, however, toiled hard and never gave up on his dreams of becoming a successful comedian. The success soon followed as he released his first special in 2000 and penned contracts with NBC and Comedy Central, before ultimately releasing two specials with Netflix. He recalled his emotional journey when he sat down with fellow artist, Gabriel Iglesias.

In Ep. #2001 of JRE, ‘Fluffy’ revealed how he slept in a car during his early struggles and then the famed podcaster resonated with him as he listed other names that went through the same before making it big. Further, the host mentioned how the pull of risk-takers attracts fellow artists. Following this, he also pointed out how the people surrounding him, who were taking care of him, made an impact.

But Rogan emphasized the importance of people who support one’s dreams instead of shunning down and casting doubts. He called it a “drag“. The color commentator also specified how friends and relatives retract when they witness the ugly “reality” of being “homeless“.

He said, “When they see the reality, like the homeless part, not having any money part, not having any healthcare part when you used to. And then the uncertainty of it all. That’s not like going to a law school.”

The former Fear Factor host then highlighted the dreaded path of a comedian where one had to “figure it out”.

The career with no straight-jacket learning methods

Rogan stated, “We didn’t have a school for it. We have to figure it out. There are many, many, many self-taught musicians, right? But you could learn on YouTube how to play guitar. You could learn to play piano. You can take lessons. They are available everywhere.”

“There is nothing that anybody could show you about comedy,” he added later.

Rogan’s two specials- ‘Triggered’ and ‘Strange Times’- are streaming on Netflix. He recently also opened the Comedy Mothership comedy club in Austin.
