A lot of UFC fans might already know about the notorious assault attempt that ‘Gambred’ made to devastate his UFC 272 opponent, Colby Covington. It all started during the pre-fight build-up to the noted bout between two best friends turned worst enemies. Both Covington and Masvidal hurled insults at each other in the pre-bout press conference of UFC 272. But, the latter found Covington’s remarks so offensive that he wasn’t satisfied even after slugging it out for five rounds with him.
On 22 March 2022, it was reported that Masvidal attempted an assault on his UFC 272 rival, Covington, during his visit to the ‘Papi Steak’ restaurant in Miami. Further investigations also revealed that Covington had suffered a broken tooth, and an injured his wrist after being struck by his adversary twice.
This infamous incident was also followed by Masvidal’s arrest after being charged with criminal mischief and aggravated battery against Covington. ‘Gambred’ was also detained by the Miami County Police in the Turner Gilford Knight correctional facility following this incident. Hence, a “yes” in answer to this question may be labeled a correct response.

Masvidal once visited the noted combat sports-themed podcast named, ‘The MMA Hour’ hosted by the noted MMA coverage personality, Ariel Helwani. Apart from discussing a volley of other things, Helwani also wanted to touch upon a rumor about Masvidal that prevailed in the MMA world. A lot in the MMA community believe that ‘Gambred’ had been arrested previously as well, prior to his infamous assault on Colby Covington.
Helwani put his interviewing skills to the test trying to lure out the answer from ‘Gamebred’. But, ‘the Miami native’ kept dodging the question. In his final attempt, Helwani stated, “Why not? How old were you[when you were arrested]?”.
But even that wasn’t enough to extract an answer from ‘Gambred’. He handled the situation quite tactfully as he avoided the question with a joke, stating, “When I what? Went to Disney World for the first time?”.
Masvidal finally accepted that he had been behind the bars previously as well because of some poor decisions he made during his younger days.
The time when Jorge Masvdial got arrested for sucker punching Colby Covington
There had been a lot of personal remarks and insults during the build-up to the coveted main event of the UFC 272 between Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington from both combatants. Also, a lot would easily label the UFC 272 press conference as one of the most heated ones to date.
Understandably, Covington’s hostility towards Masvidal was quenched after his in-octagon victory at the UFC 272 main event. But, Masvidal’s defeat after all those insults apparently enraged him even further.
On the evening of 22 March 2022, Masvidal allegedly assaulted Covington while he visited the ‘Papi Steak’ restaurant on 1st St, Miami Beach, Miami. Covington reported the incident to the police. He also stated that Masvidal had attacked him all of a sudden from the left side and punched him twice in the face. He also showcased a broken tooth and his damaged Rolex watch accusing ‘Gambred’ for everything. It was this attack on Covington which got Masvidal arrested.
Arrest And Charges Details of Jorge Masvidal
Gambred was charged with criminal mischief and aggravated battery against Covington, leading to physical damage. He was initially released on a $15k bond only to be arrested again.
Post the second-time arrest of Masvidal, Covington updated his aggravated battery allegations against him. Covington also added that he suffered a “brain injury” due to this alleged attack. The court also gave a ‘stay-away’ order to Masvidal on April 28, 2022. However, the dates for the court’s verdict on this issue have been getting postponed since the month of August 2022. It is now set for the month of May 2023.

Recently, going through a rather gloomy phase of his career, Masvidal will be looking to get back to glory. ‘Gambred’ has been matched up against his noted division-mate, Gilbert Burns, for the co-main event of the UFC 287 on 8 April, 2023.

The ‘BMF’ of the UFC will also have the majority of crowd support. The event has been scheduled to be hosted at the Miami-Dade Arena in Miami which is ‘Gamebred’ hometown. It may be said that Masvidal needs this win badly. He has also mentioned that he might decide to hang up his gloves if he gets defeated in this bout.
