Split decisions in the UFC have long been a source of controversy, and ghosts of UFC 119 come to one’s mind. When the scorecards come back with different outcomes, it can lead to heated debates about the fairness of the decision. Such was the case at UFC on ESPN 43, where Marlon Vera and Cory Sandhagen faced off in a highly-anticipated bantamweight bout.

Vera and Sandhagen are both skilled fighters. Both held an impressive record going into the fight. Vera had his last four fights. Sandhagen, on the other hand, had a record of 15 wins and four losses heading into the bout. The two fighters had been scheduled to fight earlier in the year, but the bout was postponed due to a fan uproar.

Many fans were surprised by the decision. Even UFC President Dana White was taken aback by the outcome, stating that he thought Sandhagen had won every round of the fight.

“I was literally coming out of the bathroom, I was like ‘what the f*ck’, I think everybody was surprised. It could have been 5-0. Could have been 4-0, but split? Wow!” said White.

Dana White on both fighters’ performance

Despite the controversy surrounding the decision, White was quick to praise Sandhagen for his performance. He commended the fighter’s footwork, lateral movements, and takedowns, stating that he looked incredible in the octagon.

White was less effusive in his praise of Vera, however. While he acknowledged the fighter’s knockout of former bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz, he also pointed out that Vera had looked slow in the earlier rounds of the fight. He said that even Vera‘s own corner had advised him to finish the fight in the final two rounds.
