As it was ‘Bate Estaca’s first strawweight match since UFC 251, she needed to make a statement on her return. Andrade did just that with a rare first-time submission. But what was this submission pulled off by Jessica Andrade, and why is a standing arm triangle so rare in the UFC?

What is a standing arm-triangle submission?

A standing arm triangle is nothing but a normal arm-triangle position. However, instead of it being on the mat, the modified version is pulled off while both fighters are up on their feet. Since the choke needs a lot of strength, it is very tough to finish an opponent standing.

Fight fans have seen the arm-triangle and the brutality of it, but Jessica Andrade pulling off the submission was the first occurrence of it in the UFC.

Why standing arm triangles are rare in UFC?

The arm triangles require a lot of strength. Fighters trying it in the standing position often lose the grip as the other fighters can lean back and try to escape, also they have more limbs free to use in the standing position.

As the fighter put in the hold usually falls to the mat while trying to escape from the position, this submission is very hard to pull off while standing.

How did Jessica Andrade keep Amanda Lemos standing?

Jessica ‘Bate Estaca’ Andrade is very strong for the 115 lbs division. She has already shown her brute strength in her initial run at strawweight. A slam win against Rose Namajunas to capture the title is a great example of this.
