Can Holloway's tough upbringing be the secret to his relentless fighting spirit?

Back in 2012, a 20-year-old skinny kid from Hawaii named Max Holloway joined the world’s biggest mixed martial arts promotion, the UFC, to carve his path. No one could have predicted that his journey would not only still be going strong but would also reach new heights over a decade later. From the start, ‘Blessed’ was thrown into deep waters, facing dangerous fighters like Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor early on. Despite these formidable matchups, Holloway persevered and went on a remarkable run following his loss to McGregor.

This led him to the featherweight gold and he was the top dog in the division for quite a while. Though he hit a rough patch later, ‘Blessed’ has since returned to top contender status and is currently riding a three-fight winning streak, including his explosive victory over Justin Gaethje for the BMF title. While there’s plenty to discuss about Max Holloway’s storied career, fans are just as eager to learn more about the personal life of their favorite featherweight star. So without further delay, let’s dive into it.

Max Holloway, a native Hawaiian, is a devout follower of Christianity, which, like many Hawaiians, is the most prevalent religion in the state. Its roots on the islands trace back to the influence of historical missionaries. Unlike some fighters who may invoke Christianity merely to impress their followers, Holloway has kept his faith close to his heart since the very beginning of his career. This dedication to his maker is clear through his social media presence, where he often shares glimpses of his beliefs.

One notable moment came after his submission victory over Cub Swanson in 2015, where ‘Blessed’ finished the fight in the third round with a guillotine choke. He posted a picture of himself with the caption, “Thank you to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!”

More about Max Holloway’s upbringing and roots

As we learned earlier, Max Holloway hails from Hawaii, born in 1991 to Hawaiian couple Mark Holloway and Missy Kapoi on the beautiful island of Honolulu. Not only does he carry Hawaiian heritage, but he also has some Samoan roots, as both ethnic groups are part of the larger Polynesian cultural heritage with shared ancestral ties. Although Max Holloway is an American citizen, he has chosen on many occasions to fight under the Hawaiian flag to honor the archipelago he comes from.

Similar to many fighters, Holloway’s childhood was rough, largely due to his parents’ struggles with addiction. His mother recovered, but his father succumbed to deeper issues and abandoned the family when ‘Blessed’ was just 11 years old. In a candid interview with MMA Hour, Holloway reflected on this difficult upbringing, saying, “I didn’t have a dad at all. And it was funny, it took my wife to explain to me, Yeah, you had father figures, but that’s not the same. My grandpa was my father figure. She had a hard time explaining it. He’s like my dad! But he’s not! He is still your grandpa. And it finally hit me, he was a father figure, but he wasn’t my actual father.”

Despite these hardships, they have forged Max Holloway into the strong fighter we know today. Now, all eyes are on the upcoming UFC 308, scheduled to unfold in the vibrant atmosphere of Abu Dhabi in just a few weeks, where the BMF title holder will face off against Ilia Topuria in an attempt to dethrone him.
