The fight opened up with the champion and the challenger, trading strikes before Valentina Shevchenko attempted her first takedown, but Alexa Grasso successfully shrugged that off. However, the Mexican star would soon get into a predicament when Bullet took her down successfully, but her sheer resilience helped her get back up as the crowd roared with chants for Grasso.

Valentina Shevchenko continued approaching Grasso with the same tactic in the second round, but would only find herself in trouble after eating a right hand from Grasso and getting wobbled in the process. The champion would even get into a position for a guillotine, but ‘Bullet’ was able to get out of it and she was determined to get back at Grasso.

As such, the former champion scored a clean takedown against the Mexican and threatened her with a standing guillotine attempt. But she didn’t get the tap, and the duo would have several exchanges with each other before judges would deem the fight a split decision draw. The draw wasn’t as strange as the scorecard of one of the judges of that fight.

So, when the fight ended, the scorecard had one judge giving 48-47 to Alexa Grasso and another giving 48-47 to Valentina Shevchenko. What took people by surprise was the third judge, Mike Bell, who put it 47-47, and the reason for that; Well, he had Grasso winning the final round due to which he decided to give her a 10-8 score. Now, this incident enraged not only fans but also the UFC CEO Dana White.

Dana White was having none of what Judge Mike Bell scored for the Alexa Grasso vs. Valentina Shevchenko fight. He urged the commission to launch an investigation into it, although he’d later reveal he just made a mistake, but it was a sour feeling because it happened in a title fight. “When I found out that one of the judges scored 10-8, I’m like, this guy should be f***ing investigated for this… There’s so much at stake in a title fight. More than just money, show and win and pay-per-view and championships, and legacies. You have to have the best of the best in title fights,” Dana White told the media at a DWCS presser.

Even former champion Valentina Shevchenko would be baffled at the judge’s 10-8 score and would later launch a rant full of criticism.

Valentina Shevchenko criticized the judge, and the Nevada State Athletic Commission investigates

Valentina Shevchenko was distraught at the 10-8 score, calling it “completely unfair. While sounding off at the judge, she also insinuated that maybe Alexa Grasso got the draw because it was an auspicious day for the Mexican people and fans. ” I think this event because it’s Mexican Independence Day, that’s why it affected the decision of the judge to give 10-8 in the fifth round,” Shevchenko stated at the post-fight presser. “From my experience, 10-8, it’s when one fighter completely cannot do nothing. It’s like running around, looking for an escape from the octagon. It’s like miserable.”

She suggested that judges acquire a proper knowledge of what a 10-8 score actually means, and the NSAC is responsible for seeing this through. “The scoring, they score it and you don’t see it. It’s a private thing. So yeah, I would actually like that to happen, some sort of explanation,” Valentina Shevchenko added. She would hope that such an occurrence doesn’t repeat in her trilogy fight against Alexa Grasso this weekend, given that it’s taking place on Mexican Independence Day.
