Shavkat Rakhmonov was born in Uzbekistan to a Kazakh family. The family moved back to Kazakhstan soon after, where ‘Nomad’ spent most of his life. Despite being born in Uzbekistan, he is a Kazakh national and represents the country in the UFC. Fans, of course, will remember him proudly draped in the turquoise and gold Kazakh flag along with his white Papakha hat in the octagon.
The UFC phenom would look back very fondly on his time growing up in the Kazakh steppes. His love for fighting could be traced back to the outdoorsy and very active sporting culture of Kazakhstan. His own older brother would encourage ‘Nomad’ to fight other kids, which would be a huge no-no for kids growing up in most of Europe or North America. Not so in the tribal, macho culture of Kazakhastan, as Rakhmonov himself told fans in 2022.
“We were very active as children, we did not stand still at home. Boys in the neighborhood would gather and play together. My older brothers used to make me fight. They would ask me if I would fight another kid, and I would never refuse. I would beat everyone, except for kids who were much older than me. I liked to fight, I enjoyed it immensely,” Rakhmonov recalled on an episode of ‘UFC Connect’. Now let us take a more granular look at ‘Nomad’s ethnic background.
