In early February, Ohio became witness to one of the more dangerous chemical spills to have ever happened. 50 cars of a train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed, leading to a major spill. The calamity occurred in the town of East Palestine, Ohio. Home to around 5,000 people, the accident on February third caused widespread alarm among its residents.
The threat of an explosion forced the authorities to release the remaining chemicals from the derailed cars. As a result, authorities vacated almost 2,000 civilians from the town to prevent chemical exposure.
Shields was curious about the nature of the chemicals involved and how they were being handled.

Several comments under the tweet explained the nature of the substances involved in the situation. Many of the responses explained that the derailed cars were carrying vinyl chloride. This is a substance used for manufacturing PVC pipes and such.
While PVC is harmless, vinyl chloride is a carcinogenic chemical. One user described it as a highly volatile and toxic substance.
On the trains, there was vinyl chloride used to make polyvinyl chloride or PVC, by polymerization. PVC , like pipes. Once it is polymerized, the material is harmless, but in vinyl chloride, liquid form is highly volatile and toxic.

Because of the volatile nature of these chemicals, the threat of an explosion was considerably large. Therefore, authorities mandatorily evacuated homes close to the accident site before releasing the chemicals.
After collecting the chemicals from the derailed tanker in pits, authorities burned them. The smoke from the fire sent huge black clouds of smoke into the atmosphere.
The incident caused concern among the residents of East Palestine and garnered reactions from across the state. Shields is just one among the many who are trying to comprehend and assess the seriousness of the situation.
