Did you know that the Carrington Event that occurred in 1859 was the most intense geomagnetic storm in recorded history? After several decades, the entire world went into fearful admiration again, as Mother Nature showcased the Aurora Borealis in locations other than the North Pole. Recently, a solar storm resulted in a display of beautiful green and pink dancing lights in San Francisco, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Ohio. Without a doubt, Joe Rogan had to talk about it in his podcast.

In a recent episode of ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’, the podcaster, along with his guest, Greg Overton, shared a conversation about the miraculous cosmic appearance of the northern lights in unusual locations. The beloved UFC commentator asked Overton, who lives in Utah, whether the place got to see the dancing lights. Although the JRE guest revealed that he didn’t see it himself, his daughter had sent photographs.

Soon after, Rogan revealed the dangers that hid behind the pretty front of those lights. Rogan said, “Well, we knew about it. We knew they were coming because there’s two different types of radiation that comes from those storms, when they have these big coronal mass ejections. One of them reaches us in seconds. I think that’s, that’s gamma waves. Is that what it is, that reaches us in seconds? And then the second one takes days to get us. And that’s the one that take out your cell phone towers and f**k up communications and shut down the grid and, if it gets big enough, we’re really doomed.”

The solar storm, even though was beautiful, could be calamitous. These are the results of the geomagnetic storms that occur on the sun’s surface due to its closely packed magnetic field lines. Due to this, a boatload of plasma erupts from the surface of the yellow dwarf. This in turn, disrupts the Earth’s magnetic field, which can be perceived as the Aurora Borealis.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) confirmed that the geomagnetic storm hit an extreme (G5 level). The last time such an intensity was reported back in 2003. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Mike Bettwy, NOAA Operations Chief, said, “This was certainly quite historic in many ways because we had not only a lot of intense auroras, but it also happens pretty far south into low latitudes, which we don’t normally see very often, even down to South Florida.”

It was reported that the cause of the giant storm was due to a massive sunspot that was the width of 17 Earths. The sun’s energy causes this disturbance in the Earth’s magnetic field. These gases and the altitude determine the colors of the aurora and the shapes of the aurora depend on where you view it from. Mike Bettwy added further, “We are expecting a resurgence in the storming later tomorrow and into tomorrow night… The color show and how vibrant it is. Looks like it’s going to be quite good again tomorrow night.”

However, during the conversation, the UFC commentator also talked about the Carrington event.

Joe Rogan warns about computer-controlled cars

Rogan has often shown a fascination with everything related to space. He has talked about aliens and UFOs in a lot of instances. However, with the conversation about solar storms, one can seldom skip a discussion on the Carrington event. It was a large solar storm that affected the entire world. The 56-year-old host read off the monitor on the show that the Carrington event was the most intense geomagnetic storm to have appeared in the pages of history. The storm peaked on September 1859, during the 10th solar cycle.

Furthermore, it created a display of the northern light throughout the globe. But that’s not all! The event also created sparks and fires at several telegraph stations. He further read, “The whole event lasted about 5 minutes. The flare was a major coronal mass ejection a burst of magnetized plasma from the sun’s upper atmosphere… The corona mass ejection traversed over 90 million miles between the sun…”

Imagining the impact the Carrington even would have today, Rogan commented, “What the f*** would that do today… But that’s what’s scary is that all of our cars are controlled by computers. Unless you have an old car that has a carburetor, you’re f***ed…” Doubtless, the event had Rogan on the tip of his toes.
