Every once in a while a disruptive yet skilled fighter comes along and shakes up the entire division that he is enrolled into. The Welterweight division seems to have two fighters similar to each other, at the moment. Khamzat Chimaev and Ian Garry are both fighters of great repute who have never tasted defeat.
Chimaev is scheduled to fight Paulo Costa and will be climbing up to the Middleweight division. This means that Garry would be left with the entire roster to dominate. However, it seems he doesn’t want the easy way out. In the past, Garry had expressed interest in fighting Chimaev, and in his recent interview, it seemed he is still looking forward to it – but not in the Welterweight division.

Ian Garry says he will see Khamzat Chimaev soon – Not scared of the ‘Boogeyman’?
Lightweight legend Tony Ferguson is referred to as the Boogeyman in the UFC. However, it seems, the UFC welterweight division has another Boogeyman. Khamzat Chimaev is a highly skilled and dangerous fighter who has been undefeated so far. His current record stands at 12-0-0. Ian Garry is also another extremely technical fighter who hasn’t lost a fight in the Welterweight division. Now, it seems he wants to fight Chimaev, but at Middleweight, not Welterweight.

In a recent podcast interview on The Craic, Ian Garry was asked by the interviewer why he wants to fight Chimaev so badly. “I don’t wanna fight him right now. Okay? He’s up at 185 and he’s not coming back down. But there’s a [inaudible]. That’s still – that’s gonna happen in the future.“, replied the Irish Youngblood.
However, he did acknowledge Chimaev and everything that he has accomplished within the Octagon. “That guy is f*cking legit. Alright? He’s as legit as legit comes. But everybody keeps talking about him like he’s this f*cking Boogeyman.” Garry seemed unafraid when he spoke about Chimaev and understandably so. His UFC record stands at 13-0-0.
In the end, the Irish welterweight said, “Sweet! Cool. I’ll see you in a couple of years. I’ll see you at 185. And we’ll see who the Boogeyman is.”, insinuating a Middleweight bout between Ian Garry and Khamzat Chimaev, in the future.
Khamzat Chimaev – Failed weight cut to successful weight climb
Khamzat Chimaev is probably one of the most polarizing fighters in the UFC. He has a huge following and the fans love him for the unapologetic martial artist that he is. When Chimaev went to the UK, the overwhelming love he received from the fans was a sight to see. That being said, Chimaev has also been a really controversial fighter on the UFC roster.

The undefeated fighter was supposed to fight UFC legend Nate Diaz at UFC 279. However, he missed the weight-cut by 7.5 pounds, thereby forfeiting the fight. What was alarming was that he didn’t seem bothered by it and proceeded to diss the fans who called him out for it.

Now, it seems that Chimaev has decided to stop cutting weight. Instead, he will be moving up – to the Middleweight division. His welcoming fight is against Paulo Costa, at UFC 294. If Chimaev wins this fight, Middleweight champion Israel Adesanya might want to fight him next, and that means a quick boost to the title shot.
