The referees in the UFC have rightly earned their own fanbases along with the fighters as they are an integral part of the fight culture. Due to the nature of the sport, many referees have gained fame for their decisions, sometimes controversial, and their personalities.

One such referee is Mike Beltran who has become known in the fanbase for his iconic mustache  He has an almost 2-foot-long mustache that reaches down to his waist. Morover he has a bulky frame and tall stature which combined with his quick decision-making has made him a highly respected referee in the sport.

However many fans wonder what Beltran would look like without his iconic facial hair. This question has plagued the MMA community for a long time and it seems Beltan has finally given us the answer.

Mike Beltran posts an image without his beard

The veteran referee took to Twitter and posted an image of him 27 years ago after he graduated from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department. The photo showed a clean-shaven Beltran alongside photos of him with his mustache. It is safe to say that the two images were polarizing as the difference in the pictures was quite noticeable. Morover, Beltran also stated that he was still serving as a detective for the department.

Mustache or no mustache, Beltran is still one of the best referees in the sport and committed to his profession. This certainly shows in his dedication to continuing being a detective, even after graduating 25 years ago.

Beltran clarifies doubts regarding his mustache

The referee made an appearance on Ariel Hewani’s show where he stated that he had a mustache, not a beard. He clarified this due to many thinking that he had a long beard. “It is a mustache, it is not a beard. It started out as a mustache and then, it took a personality of its own. Call it what you will, I call it a mustache.” He said.

Moreover, Beltran also revealed that he had grown this mustache for over 13 years. He stated that he despised shaving, thus growing out his facial hair. The veteran referee has trained in MMA since he started his training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the New Breed Academy in Santa Fe Springs in 2002. However, he realized the dangers that come with a sport like this and decide to become a referee instead of a fighter.
