UFC 297 was a lot of things to a lot of people. It was bloody, brutal, and for a moment, wildly confusing. That’s right. When Charles Jourdain went up against Sean Woodson, everything went a little bit haywire. Jourdain and Woodson went blow for blow, all three rounds of their bout. Finally, it came down to a decision.

And when the decision was made, Bruce Buffer, the legendary voice of the UFC announced a winner. Except, perhaps everyone heard something else. Perhaps the referee heard something else too because what transpired was the wrong hand being raised. Now, a newer angle clarifies things better.

Dana White soon addressed the issue and defended the announcer. It wasn’t Bruce Buffer’s fault because he said the right name. The decision win had gone to Sean Woodson and he said his name out loud. Except, the ref raised Charles Jourdain’s hand instead.

For a second, everyone was confused, the most bewildered person in the cage was Woodson himself. As Daniel Cormier walked into the cage for the post-fight interview he told Woodson that he’d won. His corner approached him with celebration in their eyes and voices but Woodson just couldn’t believe it.

“You’re lying” the fighter exclaimed when he was told that he was the winner of the fight and not his opponent. ‘DC’ would soon clarify to the Toronto crowd that the wrong name had been announced. The two fighters exchanged their regards and the post-fight interview began.

“I heard them announce it’s a split,” Woodson said to Cormier. “I didn’t even hear who they announced I just saw Charles and his corner celebrate so I assumed he won. It was a close fight.” Woodson admitted that he wouldn’t have called it a robbery had he lost because he could see it go Jourdain’s way. Either way, he still felt like he did enough to win. UFC 297 surely was a power-packed event with many interesting announcements.
