Tom Aspinall isn’t afraid of admitting, at least indirectly, that Jon Jones scares him. Of course, one wouldn’t be able to tell based on the interim heavyweight champ’s separation to fight Jones and his repeated call-outs of the ‘undisputed’ champion. But deep down he is scared of Jones, but that isn’t anything new. In fact, The Englishman has been afraid to different degrees of every opponent he has ever faced.

“I’m like the most scared guy in the room. Absolutely,” Aspinall told Piers Morgan in an interview after the journalist asked him if he ever felt any ‘apprehension’ as he was walking towards the octagon. This took Morgan aback and made him wonder “That’s fascinating. But is that fear or is it adrenaline stroke, apprehension of making a mistake?”

To which Aspinall channeled his inner Mike Tyson and explained why that fear was actually a good thing and how he had made it his friend. “The fear fuels me to do what I’m doing, keeps me super sharp. I think fear can do two things to you- it can either destroy you or it can help you. And I’ve figured out a way to let it like [help me],” the English UFC superstar confessed.

To the point that the Englishman will scarcely be able to perform in its absence. “Without that [fear], I’m nothing, I’m absolutely nothing. I can’t go and do what I’ve what I’d do in front of millions of people. Like I need the fear to be able to do it,” he added.

“And the bigger the occasion, the bigger the opponent, the more scared I am. And generally speaking, the better I do,” Aspinall concluded. Who could be a bigger opponent than Jon Jones, and what bigger occasion than a title fight against the GOAT contender in the biggest combat sports stage in the world. Which, of course, means that Aspinall would be the most scared he has ever been in the Jones fight. If that fight ever happens, that is.

What is the status of the Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall fight?

UFC CEO Dana White has told Tom Aspinall that the Jones fight is happening. Which led Morgan to ask “so does that mean Jon Jones has agreed?” To which Aspinall admitted frankly “I don’t know.” Jones, of course, had asked for ‘f**k you money’ to fight Aspinall, and is currently in negotiations with the promotions to try and secure it.

What’s your perspective on:

Does Tom Aspinall's fear make him a stronger fighter, or is it a sign of weakness?

Have an interesting take?

But the big question is, will the UFC and Jones actually come to an agreement? After all, the GOAT contender has been remarkably reluctant in wanting to fight Aspinall, shutting down the idea every chance he gets. This is why some suspect the ‘undisputed’ champ may just price himself out of fighting the Englishman by naming a price he knows the UFC won’t agree to.

But on the other hand, Dana White isn’t really one to sell wolf tickets. And if he has told the Englishman that the fight in definitely happening, there must be something the UFC CEO knows that the rest of us don’t. What do you think about Tom Aspinall’s comments about using fear to fuel him?
