Most people think that the Mount Rushmore of the UFC has to include Jon Jones, or maybe he’s the only one in there. Dana White seems to believe that and so do many of ‘Bones’ fans. However, his former college buddy-turned-bitter enemy, Colby Covington, has opposed that notion about the reigning heavyweight champion. He thinks Jones, despite his accolades, could not reach the heights his potential would have allowed him to.

Raiders star Maxx Crosby invited Colby Covington on his YouTube podcast recently where ‘Chaos’ shed his unfiltered thoughts on Jon Jones. Those thoughts also included some words for Bones’ claim of being the greatest MMA export ever, which Covington dismissed with some harsh criticism.

Jon Jones never reached the heights he could have, claims Colby Covington

27 wins with just 1 loss and a 13-fight winning streak in the UFC seems like a substantial reason for many to claim Jon Jones to be the best. But Colby Covington, as an athlete of the sport, believes there are certain things a fighter needs to maintain, which includes being consistent in terms of performance and drug test successes. The fact that Jones cannot wipe the failed drug tests off his ledger is why he can never truly be called the best athlete to ever grace MMA.

“Too many inconsistencies, you know. If you fail multiple steroid tests, you shouldn’t be labeled as the G.O.A.T,” Colby Covington stated on ‘The Rush’ podcast. The Miami native also pointed out the multitude of troubles Jon Jones has had outside of the Octagon. The DWIs, the arrests, and the other legal troubles all contribute to the dismissal of his G.O.A.T. claims. Covington quoted what Dana White described Jones as back in 2017, claiming that he wasted all the potential he had in him to become what he could have even though he already has an unmatched career.

“All his off-field shenanigans, you know. Just like Dana White also said that he’s the biggest waste of talent that the sport has ever seen. If he would have committed himself. I think he could have for sure been that guy, but the guy has too many skeletons in the closet,” Covington added.

Who does ‘Chaos’ rate as the greatest MMA fighter ever? Well, it was not that hard for the former interim champion as he picked the biggest star in mixed martial arts, Conor McGregor.

‘Chaos’ claims Conor McGregor’s legacy will always remain unmatched

Despite having trashed Conor McGregor in the past, Coby Covington just got honest about his G.O.A.T. pick and it was the former double champion. Covington cited how the 35-year-old took the UFC to another level, a level where MMA became a mainstream sport. The growth of the UFC, and its journey to become the biggest MMA promotion ever, also had ‘The Notorious’ play a part in drawing more eyes than ever before. That is enough for Covington to consider him the best.

“I think the best fighter in the UFC in history is obviously the biggest star Conor McGregor. What he’s done for the sport, he’s elevated us to mainstream attention and he’s brought more fans that are casuals that didn’t even watch fighting before because they just want to see Conor McGregor… he probably has the best legacy in the sport,” Covington stated. It was an interesting take from ‘Chaos’ because there weren’t any good terms between him and the Irish superstar.

We cannot be for sure why Colby Covington snubbed Jon Jones, who showcased some effortlessly dominating performances ever, although he made a great argument about Conor McGregor and how he took MMA to heights never seen before.
