Is Jon Jones' legacy tarnished beyond repair, or can he still redeem himself in the UFC?

Jon Jones has never failed to impress fight fans. Even when he was a light heavyweight, the mixed martial artist kept the fighting community at the edge of their seats. When he finally returned to the UFC after a long hiatus to fight Ciryl Gane in the heavyweight category, the world was reminded of Jones’ strength. But disappointment struck when ‘Bones’ tore his pectoral tendon and had to postpone his first heavyweight title defense against Stipe Miocic. Despite that, Dana White had nothing but praise for the HW champ. However, he was also aware of Jones’ dark side.

In a conversation with Shannon Sharpe, the UFC head honcho defended Jones’ only defeat and lifted him up high. But soon, he exposed the double champion’s dark side when he faces a camera. Let’s find out what it is.

Not too long ago, White had a talk with Sharpe on his talk show, ‘Club Shay Hay’. Therein, the UFC CEO opened up on the current heavyweight champion. He claimed that Jones was indeed the scariest fighter in the world. But it was his issues outside the Octagon that made things interesting. White seemed pretty adamant with his take about Jones being the strongest fighter in the world.

The UFC CEO said, “Jon Jones is the scariest, most bada** fighter of all time. Jon Jones has his issues outside the Octagon which actually makes it even more impressive. When you think about the lifestyle this guy was living and doing this to the best fighters in the world. And Jon Jones is one of those guys that won’t truly be appreciated until he’s gone. I’m telling you right now, when you talk about who the baddest man in the planet is. Two guys locked in a room, who is walking out? It’s f***ing Jon Jones. All day. Every time.”

Thereafter, the former tight end asked White if he already knew about Jones’ capabilities. But the UFC boss man admitted that it was only after watching him fight, did he get to know about the fighter’s prowess. Then he traveled to the times when the heavyweight was placed in front of a camera. White claimed that it was indeed scary, since Jones tried his best to act normal. He said, “For anybody to even try and say Jon Jones wouldn’t fight the… What makes Jon Jones even scarier is when you put Jon Jones in front of a camera and he tries to be normal. And he tries to talk to every- There is a dark side to Jon Jones.”

This wasn’t the only thing that White and Sharpe talked about concerning Jones. The duo also conversed about the champ’s only loss. But why did White keep on defending Jones’ defeat? Let’s get right into it.

Jones currently boasts an impressive record of 27 wins and one single loss. The defeat came at the hands of Matt Hamill, back in 2009, when Jones faced Hamill at TUF: Heavyweights Finale. ‘Bones’ lost the fight due to disqualification. ‘Bones’ was thoroughly dominating Hamill and made the bad decision of launching 12-6 elbows from the mount.

This was illegal under the unified ruleset and saw ‘Bones’ being penalized with a point deduction. Hamill was unable to continue because of a dislocated shoulder and the bout ended up being a disqualification loss for the current heavyweight champion. However, the UFC head honcho believes that ‘Bones’ is undefeated. He pointed out that it was all the result of a bad referee.

White said, “If you look at Jon Jones, he’s undefeated in the UFC. He’s got one loss on his record. He lost to Steve Mazzagati. You know who that is? He is the worst referee to ever f***ing ref in any fight. Never lost and he went through murderer’s row.” To White’s point, many argue that the fight should have been ruled a no-contest instead of a DQ loss for Jones.
