Is Jon Jones truly the GOAT, or do the rankings have it right keeping him at #2?

Jon Jones is a once-in-a-lifetime athlete in a sport as grueling and unforgiving as MMA. His dominant performance over Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 is a testament to his dynamic fighting style and high IQ inside the Octagon. Barring his DQ loss and no-contest, the heavyweight champion is virtually undefeated in his career. Dana White has repeatedly doubled down on him being the #1 pound-for-pound fighter, despite what the rankings say. In fact, Dana White has scathing criticisms for the way rankings are determined, probably also because it involves Jon Jones. Besides Dana White, Joe Rogan is also a regular passenger on the Jon Jones hype train.

Acknowledging Jones in an Instagram post, Joe Rogan wrote the following, “We’re all going to miss @jonnybones when he’s gone. Like my brother @davidgoggins likes to say, he is ‘uncommon amongst uncommon men’. There is a savage beast in every man. Believe in yourself, take on your challenges, and dig deep within yourself to conquer fears.”

The post had a video from ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’, with the UFC veteran commentator stating the following, “Jon is very different. Jon is what I would describe – there’s human beings that have different temperaments, different minds, and different mentalities and a ruthless competitive drive that’s almost terrifying to the ordinary person. That’s Jon Jones. Jon Jones is a bad guy who is trying to be a good guy.” He further added that if this were a thousand years ago, Jon Jones would be a fierce warrior on a horse that everyone would absolutely fear.

The UFC commentator claimed that Jones is a dominator who is also a genuinely sensitive, intelligent guy who’s trying to do the right thing. And that’s what leads him to display such dominance inside the Octagon, and claim the MMA GOAT status – “Without that, you don’t get there.”

With his dominant win as a result of his third-round finish over Stipe Miocic at UFC 309, Jon Jones has proved why he is largely considered the GOAT. However, despite the win, he did not regain the #1 spot in the UFC P4P rankings, drawing the ire of UFC head honcho, Dana White.

Dana White calls Meta CEO to help Jon Jones with P4P rankings

What’s your perspective on:

Is Jon Jones truly the GOAT, or do the rankings have it right keeping him at #2?

Have an interesting take?

Traditionally, the UFC pound-for-pound rankings are determined by a set of panelists from various MMA media outlets that consider many aspects before determining fighter ranks. This is a largely tedious process involving human collaboration. UFC CEO Dana White has never hidden his displeasure with the process. Even after such a dominant showing against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309, ‘Bones’ still failed to claim the top spot. This has clearly frustrated Dana White, who now wishes to scrap the traditional way of  P4P rankings and wants Mark Zuckerberg to assist him in doing so.

Despite Jones sitting at the second place in the P4P rankings, it isn’t enough for the UFC President. Dana White has been adamant about making ‘Bones’ the top P4P fighter for months now. So he’s now asked Mark Zuckerberg to sign an AI contract with the UFC. He declared, “I have to get rid of these clowns!! @zuck Let’s get this AI deal done ASAP!!!!!”. Furthermore, the UFC president previously said this in a conversation with Adam Catterall, “I actually talked to Mark Zuckerberg, too, about AI, so yeah. I’m totally going to fix the rankings. We’re going to make a lot of strong moves here, coming into 2025.”

The UFC head honcho has been pitching to get AI involved in the process for quite a while now and recently agreed with tech giant IBM to collaborate on an AI insights engine. With the P4P rankings determination as added motivation, Dana White can’t wait to have AI integration removing ‘human errors’.

What do you think of Jon Jones’ dominance as a fighter? Do you agree with Joe Rogan’s assessment of him? Will AI integrations into the UFC rankings put Jones in a better position? Let us know in the comments below.
