Can Gabriella Fernandes overcome her UFC setbacks and become a dominant force in the flyweight division?

Gabriella Fernandes is swiftly emerging as one of the most interesting prospects in the UFC’s women’s flyweight division. The Brazilian fighter, with a 9-3 professional record, will face Wang Cong (6-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) tonight at UFC Fight Night 248 in Macau. This is all set to be an exciting fight, as Wong made her UFC debut in what was a truly memorable appearance, as she knocked out Victoria Leonardo in 62 seconds.

On the contrary, Fernandes struggled in her first two UFC appearances until she finally picked up the pace in her first fight of the year. Born on August 13th, 1993, Gabriella ‘Gabi’ Fernandes was raised in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil – the country that gave us some of the fiercest fighters like Anderson Silva, Charles Oliveira and Alex Pereira. The 31-year-old started fighting on the regional circuit and eventually found her way to LFA in 2021, which would eventually serve as her launch pad to the UFC. Before joining the world’s premier MMA promotion, he had a seven-fight win streak, beating opponents like Karoline Martins, Edna Oliveira, and Queila Braga in her wake.

In her journey as a fighter, ‘Gabi’ also became a boxing coach in her hometown, training out of the Kimura Team Jorjao in Natal, Brazil. However, the most important phase of her fighting career was yet to come. Fernandes debuted in the UFC in 2023 and lost against Jasmine Jasudavicius via a unanimous decision. This was followed by another unanimous decision loss against Tereza Bledá before ‘Gabi’ finally turned things around against Carli Judice in her third appearance.
