What is the trajectory of a UFC champion? Without a doubt, defending the title is atop the list of priorities, besides making championship-level money. Apart from the basics, what is the hallmark of a modern-day UFC champion? Well, over the years we’ve seen champions come and go, but very few have taken it a step further and competed for two championship belts. As if, winning one belt isn’t hard enough! Of course, we can’t look at chasing multiple titles as a fad, after all, this is fighting, and winning two belts truly speaks to a fighter’s dominance. Newly minted welterweight champion Belal Muhammad thinks he can win two belts if he can help it.
While conversing with ‘Grind City Media’ back in August, the new welterweight champ proudly asserted that he would just need two victories against the promotion’s top contenders to become a double champ, “I’ve already beat so many top contenders. You could say Shavkat [Rakhmonov] is next but is he truly deserving to be next?
He further added, “All these guys had big wins, huge wins, but it tells me I got like maybe two fights and then I can start talking about double champ status because I already beat all these guys in the top ten.” Making sense of his analogy, Be͏͏la͏l͏ ͏M͏uha͏͏m͏m͏ad͏ ͏stated t͏͏͏͏ha͏͏t ͏͏h͏͏͏i͏͏͏s͏͏͏ ͏t͏͏i͏͏͏͏t͏͏l͏͏͏͏͏e͏͏ ͏͏͏run ͏͏͏w͏a͏͏s͏ ͏s͏ig͏n͏͏͏͏i͏f͏icant͏͏͏l͏y mo͏͏re͏͏͏ c͏hal͏l͏e͏͏n͏g͏ing th͏͏an͏͏ ͏oth͏er͏s͏͏, poi͏nt͏i͏͏ng͏ ͏o͏͏ut͏͏͏͏͏ ͏͏th͏͏͏͏a͏t͏ he ͏͏͏de͏͏͏f͏͏e͏͏at͏͏͏͏͏͏͏e͏͏͏͏d Vicente͏͏͏ ͏L͏͏u͏q͏ue͏͏ du͏ri͏͏n͏͏͏͏g ͏h͏͏i͏s͏͏͏͏͏͏ 15-͏͏fi͏ght͏͏ wi͏n͏͏͏n͏ing ͏st͏re͏a͏͏k͏, G͏͏͏i͏lb͏͏͏͏e͏͏͏rt ͏Burns͏͏͏͏ w͏͏h͏͏͏͏͏͏͏il͏͏e͏ h͏e ͏wa͏͏s͏͏͏ on ͏a͏ ͏͏͏t͏w͏o͏-͏fi͏ght w͏͏͏͏in͏n͏in͏͏g͏ ͏s͏tre͏͏ak͏͏͏,͏ a͏nd͏͏ ͏Se͏͏͏a͏n ͏B͏rady͏, ͏who͏ ͏͏was͏͏ und͏͏ef͏e͏a͏͏t͏͏e͏͏d ͏͏wi͏͏th ͏͏͏a͏ 15͏-0 ͏re͏c͏or͏͏d͏. Interestingly, it should be taken into consideration that ‘Durinho’ was fighting with an injured hand against Muhammad and still made the fight with ‘Remember The Name’ uber-competitive.

Being a double champ is the ultimate goal for a modern-day UFC champion but even for that, a champion would have to clear out their entire division or be – in some sense – an entertaining fighter and Belal Muhammad is accused of not doing both. The thing is, Muhammad’s bid for double-gold this early in his reign as champion seems premature, especially since he can’t make it to his first title defense against Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310. No fault of his own, of course, he suffered a bone infection due to staph and was forced to pull out of the bout. However, he has to recover, come back, and defend his title at least once before mentioning winning titles at different weight classes.

Belal Muhammad irks the MMA community with his double-champ rant
The era ͏of the champ-champ was initiated by͏ Conor McG͏regor when he held both the feath͏erweight and li͏ghtweight bel͏ts simultaneously. A͏part from McGregor, notable d͏o͏ub͏le champions include Dani͏el Cormier, ͏Ama͏nda Nunes, and Henry C͏ejudo. M͏o͏st ͏of͏ these fig͏ht͏e͏rs were͏ ͏either highly͏ entertaining or had cleared out thei͏r͏ re͏sp͏ective divis͏ions, which͏ is why the promo͏tion gr͏anted them th͏e opportu͏nity to fight͏ f͏or a sec͏ond title͏. Looking at this a fan wrote, “UFC will never give Belal that opportunity, they don’t even want him to have 1 belt.” Furthermore, a fan emphasized that Muhammad would have to fight Rakhmonov, an extremely dangerous undefeated fighter,“He forget he’s gonna fight Shavkat sooner or later”
Moreover, a fan believes that Belal Muhammad doesn’t have the capability to defend the title specifically due to the fact that most of ‘Remember The Name’ wins have come by way of decision, “He’s losing the belt before he defends it.” Muhammad argued that he had cleared out the top 10 of his division which is a false statement considering the fact that there are tons of top contenders who has been waiting to fight him for the belt, “He hasn’t best Shavkat, Garry, Usman, Colby, JDM. That’s plenty of work to do. Man will never qualify as a double champ.”

Furthermore, fans appear to be annoyed with what Muhammad stated,“I hope not, nobody will watch that fight card” The middleweight division is filled with fighters such as Israel Adesanya, Sean Strickland, Khamzat Chimaev and much more it would be immensely difficult for Muhammad to get past these legends considering the fact that they are much bigger than him, looking at this a fan wrote, “Beat Shavkat and JDM first. Even if he can which I doubt, DDP KO’s him on 1. Imavov and Ciao both best him as well.”
We’re not sure when Belal Muhammad will return to defend his title, but it’s safe to assume that he will have to put on spectacular performances inside the Octagon for Dana White to grant him a shot at another title. What do you think of Muhammad’s claims? Let us know in the comments down below.
