Weight misses in the UFC never help any fighter, as they either see their fight getting canceled or their fights get turned into a catchweight bout, which is something that Dana White is not a fan of. However, former UFC fighter Josh Thomson claims that the CEO did help one fighter when he missed weight, which was Nate Diaz, back when they fought in 2013.
Thomson scored one of his seven career knockout wins against Nate Diaz back more than 11 years ago, but that fight was marred with a bit of controversy, according to the UFC veteran. He claimed that the Stockton native had missed weight a by small margin, but the UFC top brass, which included Dana White and Joe Rogan, made sure to keep that a secret.
“Nate didn’t make weight [for their fight]. They literally just said like he got on the scale and he was one pound off,” Josh Thomson stated on the ‘Weighing In’ podcast. “It was very obvious. I was watching it and then he gets off and he takes his underwear off. They put a sheet around him, he steps on, but still didn’t make weight.”

The initial attempt to make weight didn’t pan out well for Diaz, despite removing all the gear he was wearing. Thereafter, Josh Thomson noticed Dana White and the Stockton native, along with other UFC executives, getting together for a small chat, which also involved Joe Rogan. As soon as their discussion came to an end, Diaz stepped on the scale again and was declared to have made weight. However, Thomson remained skeptical as he proceeded to ask Rogan about it, but he didn’t feel satisfied with the 57-year-old’s response.
“He [Nate Diaz] gets off, they talk about in a huddle – Joe Silva, Dana, Joe Rogan’s like kind of listening in… he gets back on… and all of a sudden he makes weight,” Josh Thomson added. “The bottom line is, I said, ‘Hey’. I went to Joe and I go, ‘Look, I just wanna know, did he make the weight?’ And he looked at me, and he’s like, ‘Oh yeah, he made it.’ And I go, ‘Did he really?'”

But has Nate Diaz actually missed weight ever? Well, he has on one particular occasion.
Nate Diaz has missed weight only once but in a massive way
Weight misses happen often, but it’s not something fighters want to keep repeating. Like many other fighters, Nate Diaz also has only one recorded instance of missing weight in 2014. Following his loss to Josh Thomson, the 39-year-old would bounce back with a win over Gray Maynard, but then he’d go on a hiatus for over a year. But when Diaz returned to take on former champion Rafael dos Anjos, and it was then that he made his first and only weight miss ever.

However, that weight missed wasn’t a normal one because Nate Diaz weighed in at 160.5 pounds, 5.5 pounds over the 155-pound limit for lightweight. However, he was given some time to lose some pounds and get back on the scale, but that didn’t work out, and the fight against dos Anjos was deemed as a catchweight bout. White was understandably fuming at the Stockton native and made his feelings known about Diaz’s antics. “The guy is complaining about money, but he’s done tons of things to ensure that he gets fined,” the head honcho stated a decade ago.
Currently, Nate Diaz isn’t in the UFC and the chances are that he may never come back given that he’s getting a bit into boxing. However, a few credible big-time fights are waiting for him, such as the trilogy with Conor McGregor. So, let’s see if Diaz comes back for more action inside the Octagon.
