UFC 300 promises to be a great time with many high-profile fights, but Dana White has yet to announce the main event of the pay-per-view. However, MMA legend and analyst Chael Sonnen seems to have confirmed that the UFC has one fight in mind to headline the April PPV. He recently revealed that the promotion offered Dricus du Plessis and Israel Adesanya to fight in the main event of UFC 300.

There is no love lost between Israel Adesanya and Dricus du Plessis. There is a real animosity between them, emanating from the “real African” debate, which was one of the most talked-about incidents in 2023. As such, Chael Sonnen revealed that the UFC already set plans in motion for this fight.

In a recent video posted on his YouTube channel, Chael Sonnen confirmed that Dana White and the UFC matchmakers had decided to feature Dricus du Plessis and Israel Adesanya in the UFC 300 main event. As such, they’ve both been approached by the promotion to consider the matchup. Sonnen said, I can personally confirm for you [that] DDP has been offered Izzy at [UFC] 300 [and] Izzy has been offered DDP at [UFC] 300. I can personally tell you that happened.”

‘The American Gangster’, however, has no information regarding one aspect of that proposal. He doesn’t seem to be aware if either Dricus du Plessis or Israel Adesanya had decided to dismiss that matchup. I cannot tell you which side, if either side or potentially both sides, said no. I don’t have that piece of the story,” Chael Sonnen added. Although the champion had called out ‘Izzy’ after his UFC 297 win, the MMA legend claims that the fans want another matchup instead.

Fans want to see du Plessis vs Strickland 2

Chael Sonnen mentioned that he and ESPN’s Brett Okamoto posted a poll for the UFC fans to see whom they wanted to see Dricus du Plessis fight next. Interestingly, most fans wanted to see the South African fight Sean Strickland in a rematch, given that there was a head-butt controversy at UFC 297. Sonnen further stated, “I can also come and tell you… when Brett Okamoto represented ESPN, personally did a poll, and it brings up who would you, the audience, like to see next for Dricus… surprisingly and unanimously, it’s Strickland.”

Nevertheless, the UFC mostly does what they want and they are waiting for Dricus du Plessis and Israel Adesanya to put pen to paper for the April fight. However, if both fighters ask the promotion to change the date, the offer will not stand, according to Chael Sonnen. If both guys [du Plessis and Adesanya] say, ‘Yes, but we want to fight in May’, the deal’s off because there was never a deal for May,” ‘The American Gangster’ added.

Sean Strickland did not ask for a rematch, even though he claimed that Dricus du Plessis head-butted him. Hence, the UFC has not made any statement on that front as they look focused on setting up a fight for the champion taking on Israel Adesanya. But we still have to wait for an official confirmation.
