Remember how Dana White said he has big-fight news coming up? Could it be Dustin Poirier versus Colby Covington? We do not know, but that’s what the latest rumors suggest. Speculations about them fighting at the Madison Square Garden at UFC 309 are quite high. Considering how both the fighters have some serious heat between them, this potential matchup could be big.

Their mutual dislike dates back to Covington’s fallout with Jorge Masvidal. At one point, they were stablemates at the American Top Team, until Covington infamously turned into what WWE would call heel. ‘Chaos’ went ballistic on Poirier and his wife Jolie during his tirades. So this potential fight will sell some tickets. But fans are having a tough time accepting this fight.

They are not convinced, and it showed under a Reddit post about the same. Here’s the thing. White had announced he had fight news about Alexander Volkanovski and Charles Oliveira, among others, coming up. Soon after that, rumors of ‘Volk’ vs. ‘Do Bronx’ began to gain traction. Is White cooking up some big fights for the UFC’s annual return to MSG? We hope so because it is about time Covington got back inside the octagon.

His last fight was against Leon Edwards at UFC 296 (2023) and he has yet to make a comeback. On the other hand, Dustin Poirier lost his chance at the 155 lbs gold against Islam Makhachev. Both of the fighters are coming off from a loss and it’s just palpable that they need a win badly. There were rumors that Poirier would be retiring from the MMA business after his loss against Makhachev, but it looks like he won’t leave without a win.

But could he really face ‘Chaos’? Yes, their rivalry exists, but back in 2022, Poirier said something that makes this fight seem impossible. What did he say?

“I would never fight Colby in an Octagon where there’s finances on the line. If I fight Colby, we’re both going to jail. I’m going to jail … I’m not gonna fight him in the Octagon. He’s not making money off of my career and what I’ve done. This is something different. You will never see me fight Colby Covington in the UFC,” ‘The Diamond’ shared after Covington called him out.

However, it looks like the fighter may have changed his mind about Covington, just like he changed his mind about retirement. The former interim lightweight champion took to his Instagram to state, “Big news coming soon. [One more].” So is the fight news between Colby Covington and Dustin Poirier legit? Fans don’t think so!

Fans won’t blindly accept Dustin Poirier vs Colby Covington…

While Poirier versus Covington is a fight people would want to watch because of their intense dislike for each other, fans were not sure about the authenticity of the source.

  • “Probably fake, coming from one of those regarded accounts that post bulls–t to farm likes.”
  • “That Rueben Carter guy posted it, no chance it’s true.”

Though many fans were skeptical about the matchup, they couldn’t help but imagine the potential outcome; Especially considering Colby Covington’s career is in the doldrums. There was a time when he was considered as one of the best wrestlers of the division, but now his glory days are in the past. With a career record of 17 fights and 4 defeats, ‘Chaos’ is 2-3 in his last five fights. In addition to that, he has lost three chances to clinch the welterweight gold. “Colbys career officially ends after this fight,” a fan concluded.

Both Poirier and Covington are coming off losses. Not only that, but both fighters have been former interim champions in their respective divisions. Unfortunately, they could never become the ultimate champions. So their career trajectory looks quite similar. Owing to this, a fan stated, “Sounds good, retirement fight for both.”

“Tbh seeing how good Dustins takedown defence was against Islam, also the fact Colby is very unlikely to finish him. I have a hard time seeing Colby going 5 rounds without Dustin catching his chin,” a Reddit user concluded. The fan seems to have a point. This also reminds us of how Jorge Masvidal defended several takedown attempts by Covington at UFC 272.

Well, we will have to wait and watch to know more about Dustin Poirier versus Colby Covington. Do you want to see them clash? Let us know in the comments below.
