It all started when an X handle made a leak that UFC is planning to schedule Colby Covington vs.Dustin Poirier at UFC 309 scheduled to take place in Madison Square Garden. This revelation sent the entire MMA community into raptures, as this fight has been in the making since Jorge Masvidal was in the UFC. How? Well, ‘Chaos’ and ‘Diamond’ had a pretty nasty beef that sadly involved Poirier’s wife, Jolie Poirier.

This fight has the potential to sell as quickly as a $1 pizza on the streets of New York City but is the UFC serious about it? Well, according to UFC insider, Chael Sonnen, the UFC is indeed thinking about it. “These guys went at it pretty good, and there is a real story here that is every bit as Colby versus Masvidal. Everything that ever had to do with Colby and Masvidal involved Poirier. If you guys know that, then you’re with me. But I’m sharing if you don’t, you’re going to find out. However, they were different weights,” said Sonnen.

He further added, “Dustin only fights for championships, and Covington only fights for championships—these guys are now going into a non-contendership, non-championship match. Like, this is straight up personal grudge. I’m here just to ask you guys: Is it happening? I got two different reports, and the one that I had that looks like artwork put out by the organization used the word “headliner.”

Back in 2022, when Poirier was asked whether he would like to fight Covington, the fighter said, “I would never fight Colby in an Octagon where there’s finances on the line. If I fight Colby, we’re both going to jail. I’m going to jail … I’m not gonna fight him in the Octagon. He’s not making money off of my career and what I’ve done. This is something different. You will never see me fight Colby Covington in the UFC.”
