Is Conor McGregor's retirement a genuine move or just another publicity stunt?

Conor McGregor vs.Michael Chandler was a fight that was supposed to materialize at the grand stage of UFC 303, however, McGregor’s toe injury pulled him out of the clash. Their match was officially canceled and there’s been no sign of a rescheduling of it. Chandler is now without a fight and Dana White has advised him to not wait for McGregor if he wants to get ahead of his career.

Well, then what’s next for both Chandler and McGregor? ‘Notorious’ has claimed that he will be back in September but he has not announced who will be his opponent. The toe injury forced Conor McGregor to step away from his clash against Michael Chandler. This was a serious lapse as their fight was one year in the making. The entire fiasco has forced Dana White to move his head away from McGregor for the time being. For Michael Chandler, the situation is a bit more complex as he has been inactive for more than a year now and if he doesn’t fight now, it will be harsh on him.

However, rumors floated around that Chandler is looking for a potential fight and this time it’s not McGregor but the lightweight champ, Islam Makhachev. The former Bellator champion emphasized that he has been offered to fight for the title on his X account. The entire drama just became a mess. Well amid the hubbub, Chael Sonnen has come forward to deliver bad news for Chandler.

According to the UFC legend, Conor McGregor is very close to retirement and this might be one of the reasons why the fight was canceled. “If Michael Chandler is offered Islam, there is a message being delivered to him that he has got to be able to hear: the words ‘We cannot get you Conor McGregor. We are not going to get you, Conor McGregor,” said Chael Sonnen.

He further added, “We are not going to rebook you and Conor McGregor.’ Those words are not being used, but there are a number of reasons why they can’t. There are a number of legal words in our industry that matter—’canceled’ versus ‘postponed.'” Sonnen might have dropped a reality bomb on Chandler but is he still waiting for McGregor?
