Will Dustin Poirier finally settle the score with Colby Covington, or is it just talk?

Dustin Poirier climbed back to the headlines this week as he hinted at his return to the UFC. Even though the former UFC interim lightweight champion had seemingly taken retirement from the Octagon, he still has a few more fights left in his contract. And his next bout has begun to raise the fighting community’s entropy as ‘The Diamond’ announced on X, “Fight News Coming.” Fans believe that it’d be against teammate turned rival Colby Covington.

Back in 2022, ‘Chaos’ ignited a rivalry with ‘The Diamond’ as he called the Cajun fighter out for a fight. However, Poirier wasn’t in the mood to entertain Covington. Instead, he lashed out at the welterweight contender and promised that the only way he would fight ‘Chaos’ would be outside the Octagon. He said, “I would never fight Colby in an Octagon where there’s finances on the line. If I fight Colby, we’re both going to jail. I’m going to jail … I’m not gonna fight him in the Octagon. He’s not making money off of my career and what I’ve done. This is something different. You will never see me fight Colby Covington in the UFC.”

Rumor mills began to churn yet again and the internet was filled with anticipation of a fight between Poirier and Covington. Needless to say, it was one of the bouts that had the potential to attract quite a bit of attention from the sporting world. However, Poirier shut everything down as he clearly stated that he was not interested in fighting Covington at all. This was further solidified by Grant Dawson’s wife, Elle Dawson, on Instagram.

Regardless, Covington has never spared a chance to take a dig at Poirier or his wife Jolie. The former American Top Team star fell out with his stablemate after his beef with Jorge Masvidal. Covington burned more than a few bridges ATT before leaving their camp. So it’s no surprise Poirier does not want Colby to make money off of him.

However, the fighting community wasn’t about to let it all go. They pulled the Californian fighter back again and pitted him against Dustin Poirier.

Have an interesting take?

As soon as Poirier’s words found their way across the social media platforms, the fight fans took over the comments section and put together the matchup between Colby Covington and ‘The Diamond’. Some of the fans claimed that if the duo clashed against each other, it would indeed be Poirier who would win. One fan commented, “pillow hands colby would get murdered.”

Another interesting angle to this narrative is that this is going to be Poirier’s last fight. The former interim champion made it clear on multiple ocassions. He would have retired in June if he had beaten Islam Makhachev for the title. So, whatever ‘the Diamond’ choses, it can be guaranteed to be banger fight. But will it be against ‘Chaos’?

Another fan reflected on the Cajun fighter’s claim that he would fight Covington out in the streets. The comment read, “i still wanna see it, a man that says he’d rather fight Colby outside the octagon with the end result being him ending up in jail is a man with murderous intent, I need to see that fight.”

No wonder, Covington wasn’t the only name that appeared in the comments. The fighting community wanted Poirier to have a rematch against Conor McGregor and Justin Gaethje, as well. One of the fans wrote, “Most likely trilogy with gaethje or fight Colby.” While another comment read, “Gaethje Trilogy, Conor Quadtrilogy or Colby at 170.”

Nevertheless, Poirier’s denial shone through. After all, he seemingly had no interest whatsoever in fighting Covington. And one of the fans knew this pretty well. The fan commented, “he already said he not fighting colby.” But a few others knew that the upcoming bout might just be the last fight in the former interim champion’s professional MMA career. The fan wrote, “The last Dance.”

As the hype around Poirier’s return continues to excite the realm of combat sports, all we can do is wait and watch the story unfold. Do you think the UFC will pit Poirier and Covington against each other? Drop down to the comments down below and let us know what you think.
