It took a massive amount of time for UFC to become a top promotion of the world. The sport first had to fight off against unfair banning and horrific treatment from the various commissions that branded it as too violent.
UFC president Dana White, together with the Fertita brothers, revived MMA and added a few rules that helped grant it the status of an actual combat sport, much like boxing, kickboxing and wrestling, and pulled it out of the dark ages.

Dana White Almost cost UFC its license in NSAC back in the day
When White made an appearance in The Pat McAfee Show and shed light on a horrifying call from NSAC’s (Nevada State Athletic Commission) governor. Without taking names, he stated his comments about NSAC following the conclusion of UFC 167 featuring George St Pierre and Johny Hendricks.

He revealed how the NSAC Governor called him up on a Sunday morning and threatened to pull their license for bad-mouthing the commission.
He said,” Back then, when I was going crazy on the athletic commission, I was home on a Sunday morning after the fight and my phone rang. It was the governor of Nevada. Basically, me and him had one of those,’ if you ever f**g talk s**t about the state of Nevada like that again, I’ll pull your license. You will never promote another fight again.”
This would have essentially set the sport back by 10 years, tossing it into the dark ages once again. NSAC is the most respected and prominent athletic commission in the country, and every other state acknowledges its decisions.

A report by bloodyelbow sheds light on White’s frustration after UFC 167 concluded and the judges allegedly failed to deliver the right decision. In addition to that, a certain portion of fans blamed the judges, while White took aim at the Nevada commission.

“I think the Nevada State Athletic Commission is atrocious. I think the governor needs to step in immediately before these guys destroy this sport as they did boxing. The alternatives are that the governor needs to step in and fix the incompetence that is happening in the state of Nevada that used to be the best commission in the world.”

“It’s absolutely 100 percent incompetence, and it needs to stop, and I’m scared to come back here and do fights. I’m afraid of this state.”
