Is Chandler's ultimatum to McGregor a sign of desperation or a masterstroke in fight promotion?

Former UFC champion Conor McGregor has been out of the octagon for years now, but he hasn’t held back from verbally attacking his opponents on social media. After targeting Khabib Nurmagomedov for a few days, McGregor has now turned his attention to upcoming opponent Michael Chandler, who recently expressed disinterest in the match. McGregor recently reignited the feud by posting a video clip on X and referencing Chandler in the caption, seemingly mocking the fighter.

This post caught Michael Chandler’s attention, and he was quick to respond to Conor McGregor’s comments, expressing frustration and urging McGregor to focus on recovery rather than social media jabs. Chandler wrote, “Can’t wait to bounce your “champ champ” head off the canvas @TheNotoriousMMA – get your sh*t together so I can.” With this post, it seems the Chandler fight might actually happen in the future. Recently, Chandler hinted on social media that he was considering moving on and focusing on Max Holloway.

Irritated by these allegations, Chandler announced his decision to pull out of the fight in a Twitter post, writing, “Never mind guys…I think it’s time I finally admit the fight is off. He’s still in stage 2 of the 7 of grief of his career being over. Figured he’d be closer to 5 by now. Godspeed @TheNotoriousMMA.” Chandler also gave McGregor a two-week deadline to provide an update on his injury.

When Chandler issues an ultimatum to Conor McGregor

For two years, Michael Chandler’s career has been on hold due to Conor McGregor. Whether it’s McGregor’s controversies with anti-doping agencies, his involvement in business ventures, or his Hollywood aspirations, these factors have consistently interfered with their fight. Initially scheduled for June 29th at UFC 303, the event was scrapped due to McGregor’s Pinky-toe injury. Now, with a lack of response from McGregor. Chandler stated, “I think we’ll know a lot in the next week or two [about how this is] going to play out. I’ve gotten that question a lot over the last year, you know, about a timeline. Is there a certain date [to move on from McGregor]? When do you pull the plug? When do you, you know, insert a catchphrase here? And I haven’t really thought about it.” Additionally, Chandler expressed interest in fighting BMF title holder Max Holloway, a fight also rumored for UFC 303 before McGregor’s injury pullout. This statement was made by Chandler nearly two weeks ago. Now, after those two weeks, McGregor has finally hinted at returning from his injury.
